KARACHI: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) set December 16 as the date to frame charges against a paramilitary soldier in the murder case of an unarmed taxi driver.

Judge Bashir Ahmed Khoso of ATC-I supplied copies of the charge-sheet to the suspect on Monday and adjourned the hearing till December 16, when the suspect will decide whether to plead guilty or not guilty. Lance-Naiks Ghulam Rasool and Barkat Ali were arrested alongside Rangers men, Waqar Ahmed and Qadeer Abbas, for their alleged involvement in the killing of a taxi driver, Murid Abbas, who was gunned down in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on July 16.

However, no evidence was found that could confirm that Ali, Ahmed and Abbas were either involved in the incident or intended to get involved. They were, therefore, released by the court.

The prosecutor informed the judge that the forensic report confirmed that the bullet fired from the rifle of Lance Naik Rasool matches the bullet recovered from the deceased’s body. The investigating officer, after examining the crime scene and recording witness statements, told the court that the murder was unintentional as Rasool had tried to stop the taxi driver by firing at the taxi’s tyres.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant of the case — who is also the widow of the deceased taxi driver — said that she has forgiven them and was willing to withdraw the case.  The prosecutor claimed that Rangers had paid the complainant over Rs2 million as compensation, while also providing her employment and are bearing the expenses of her two children.

The Supreme Court had taken a suo motu notice on the case on July 26.
