KARACHI:

A police constable was martyred and another seriously injured when armed motorcyclists opened fire on them near the Madrasa Wali Canal in the Manghopir area on Thursday.

According to police, the incident occurred when two suspects riding a motorcycle were signaled to stop by patrolling officers. When they did not stop and tried to escape, the officers pursued them, on which the suspects opened fire. As a result, 40-year-old Constable Khadim Ali Shah sustained a gunshot wound to the head and later succumbed to his injuries, while a bullet hit in the leg of Constable Muhammad Tufail who fell into a nearby canal. Both were shifted to a private hospital, where Khadim Ali Shah was pronounced dead.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) West Tariq Ilahi Mastoi said that two types of weapons were used in the attack. Police found 11 casings of spent bullets, fired from 9mm and 30 bore pistols, at the crime scene. Following the incident, a heavy police contingent reached the scene, sealed the area, and called in the Crime Scene Unit to collect evidence.
