A leader of the peace committee in Matta was gunned down by unknown militants in the Sambat area of Swat district on Tuesday.
Amjad Khan, the Station House Officer of Matta police said Ali Akbar was on his way home after Isha prayers when unknown militants opened fire at him from assault rifles, killing him on the spot.
The SHO said that police rushed to the spot after the incident and blocked all entry and exit routes of the area while starting a small-scale search operation to catch the culprits.
The body was shifted to Saidu Sharif medical hospital for autopsy.
Khan further added that so far, no family member of the peace committee leader had filed a case and no group had claimed responsibility till the filing of this report.
Peace committee members have been often targeted by militants in the past.
Earlier in October, the head of peace committees Idrees Khan demanded that the government ensure the protection of committee members.
“We are helping security forces and law enforcement agencies without taking salaries; the least the government can do is give us protection.”
