KARACHI:

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that the government cannot be held responsible for how universities performed in the past.

He was presiding over a meeting with the education department officials on Thursday. A committee of academic and legal experts has also been constituted to propose an amendment to the controversial Sindh Universities Bill that, according to the CM, aims to improve public sector university facilities and introduce a campus management system to monitor their performance.

Shah informed committee members that any amendment in the bill will need the cabinet’s approval before it is presented to the provincial assembly. Shah felt that a legal system needs to be evolved in order to improve quality and accessibility of education in public universities.

Shah expressed his optimism that quality of university education will improve after the bill handed university control to the provincial government. He also revealed that teachers in public universities are paid more than those in the private sector.
