After seeing 'Waar' i honestly feel us indian film makers should get off our assumed high horses and look at pakistani films seriously
— Ram Gopal Varma (@RGVzoomin) October 26, 2013
As frantic journalists, film critics and cinema lovers press their Pakistani counterparts to send over DVDs, Bilal Lashari addresses speculations surrounding his film’s release in India.
Bhai Jan waar ka DVD le Kar aana ( pirated bhi chalega ) mein paharganj se pick up kar lunga aapko aapka rab ka wasta bhool mat Jana :):)
— Rahul saunik (@supersaunik) November 5, 2013
@Qwintessentwit I wanna see Waar - @jehan_ara get me a DVD when you come in Feb - I am chairing the NASSCOM ILF event this year by the way !
— Ganesh Natarajan (@GaneshNatarajan) October 27, 2013
“I have not approached anyone specifically for distribution in India, but I cannot give any more details on that for now,” Lashari tells The Express Tribune. Given the theme of the film and the perception that ‘Waar shows India as cause of nation’s problems’, the director says, “I have no idea how people will react, but it would be great if it ends up being screened. A lot of people are saying it’s never going to happen.”
Bollywood films depicting military or intelligence agents from Pakistan – such as Ek Tha Tiger and Agent Vinod – have traditionally not passed the local censor board filters. Lashari feels Waar could meet a similar fate. “I would love to show the film as it is,” he says. “I think it would get a very interesting reaction. I am curious to know how people will react to it – I don’t think they should react badly.”
The director remains adamant in his refusal to remove scenes. “I won’t be cutting out any scenes because I can’t think of a way around it,” he says. “I think we have been very subtle,” he says, referring to the portrayal of RAW agents Ramal and Laxmi, who mastermind major terror plots in Waar. “We will probably take out some words. The censor board is yet to see the film. They will watch the unedited version and propose edits. We will amend it accordingly as there is no harm in toning it down for that one market.”
Seriously, though – why Indian agents?
Lashari hints that the inclusion of Indian agents in the storyline made the story more “interesting”. “It could have been any other [villain]. But the specific Indian element made it more interesting,” he admits. “I knew people would be intrigued but never thought it would be taken as seriously as it has.”
While he is aware that it has irked those across the border, he relates an incident at a bookstore, where a group of people approached him with compliments. “They were really happy. One of them said ‘Finally humari taraf se bhi jawab gaya’,” he said, referring to Bollywood’s negative portrayal of Pakistan’s institutions.
“It’s not the reaction I was expecting, but at the same time a part of me thinks there is no harm. They make films like these too, so here is the first from our end. If people are enjoying Waar as a rebuttal, then that’s okay too.
Given the tense relations between India and Pakistan and recent skirmishes on the LoC, the director is aware that the message of Waar may not be warmly welcomed by Indian audiences. “The question is whether they will take it as being just a film. People need to realise this is entertainment – not a documentary. The film is not against the people of India,” he says.
“The tricky part is the notion of so-called ISPR involvement in the film. If that’s the perception India wants to maintain, then it can be taken as more than just a film,” he continues, adding, “I’ve given up trying to convince people that there is no ISPR involvement in the script or characters. But that would make things boring wouldn’t it?”
When asked how he feels about Varma watching a pirated DVD of Waar, Lashari laughs. “I don’t feel so great about it. We are working on an international release so pirated DVDs obviously don’t help. But I did ask him if it was a good pirated version,” he laughs. “I don’t want people watching a sh***y version.”
He adds that he called RGV himself. “I was sick of people telling me about the tweets so I thought I would get in touch and make sure it is him,” he shares. “Turns out it was. We had a really good conversation for 15 to 20 minutes. I wanted to accuse him of hijacking my life!”
As unlikely as it may seem, Lashari hopes to see his film release in India. “If it does get screened, the release in India will be limited. It will not be a mainstream release.”

Actually it would need a lot of courage from the indians to have the guts to release this movie in their country. although it is noway as damning as they make their movies but still i dont think they have the courage.
I am amazed that Pakistanis want us to have waar released in India. I have seen Punjabi films in Indian cinemas, beautiful Pakistani films like yake waali and kartar singh.I am shocked to hear that Bhag Milkha Bhag was banned in Pakistan. Gosh why? It is a reality that his parents did die in riots at time of partition, was that the reason? A film with too much English is not for usual Indian audience. I can believe some one if they tell me Indians help Bloch insurgents but Taliban---that is crazy notion. Why are you calling their head a shaheed then and want to negotiate with your "brothers". I absolutely loved lakshya..it is very much inspired from real events, your own generals admit to it on your TV. Films like waar are very dangerous to countries like Pakistan who are narscists living in world of conspiracy theories. They need to be gradually brought to reality not further push them in dream world which will destroy their own society in the end.it is not just a movie as producer said, it is more than that It doesn't help Pakistan in its fight against root cause of its problems, it adds to it.
@Pradhan: Yes my dear friend it has recovered it's total budget and surpass its budget by only releasing in Pakistan and think about it that how much this movie is going to collect in other 26 countries and India is one of those countries .
Bollywood films depicting military or intelligence agents from Pakistan – such as Ek Tha Tiger and Agent Vinod – have traditionally not passed the local censor board filters. Lashari feels Waar could meet a similar fate. . If Indian Films with a similar content are not shown Locally due to the Local Censor Boards in Pakistan then why does Mr. Lashari want INDIA to allow Waar not to meet a similar fate? Does he mean that there is one Law in Pakistan and despite that Indian Censor Boards should allow Pakistani Film Waar to be Screened in India? . Cheers
@Zayyad: Did he?
How does one trust a man who did not know his own date of birth till the time of his retirement?
Its all about money, honey. You censor our movies, channels, and what not. We won't allow you to make money. Keep it with you.
@spock i agree to ur point raanjhanaa should have been allowed to release in pakistan.
Indians being Indians. Ban every bollywood from release in Pakistan.
obsession of Indians with anything about Pakistan and this movie says it all. Do you guys read your own news papers at all or trolling Pakistan news sites all the time? get a life seriously! Mollywood and Hollywood made many films depicting Pakistan in bad light, why cant you guys take a back seat and watch it as film, it will be good break from masala film you guys churn out daily.
Waar will be a complete failure in indian market..because its not portraying sex scenes in it and indians dont like a movie till they dont seee sex in it.. Bilal we r waiting in dubai for it..Forget india
@Kumar, Anurag and other Indian friends,
You wouldn't watch a Pakistani movie that slams some bitter truth on your media puffed faced, yet you guys will keep buzzing in a Pakistani newspaper like angry bees 24/7. LOL. You guys will fail to hide your obsession with Pakistan one way or the other ;).
@Don't be Goebbels: I agree...now move over...this sleeping spot is mine.
The place feels suffocated stuffed with hindustais whose media would not allow Pakistanis to post comments on their websites and here they are spewing their inner filth against us courtesy the "liberal" ET. Well done ET keep letting the filth flowing in our home
@Anurag
We have good viewership from the rickshaw pullers and paan bidi sellers who stay away from applying logic while watching movies. Waar would be a ‘never before such pleasant ‘ experience for them.
Well this is 90% of the viewership for your hindi movies as well. So dont worry they will have a good time !
WAAR exposed true face of Indians which is quite evident from their insecurity in this forum lol
Ladies & Gentlemen
Waar is an action flick (just like a lot of its Bollywood counterparts) aimed for entertainment. We see Indian flicks that portray a similar image(if not of the 'devil incarnate' itself) of Pakistan.
My humble request to both sides is that before you comment just repeat to yourselves "Its only a movie!" then perhaps we will all act in a more mature manner.
Both countries are realities, are here to stay and both sides have and will continue to produce all kinds of movies (mostly for entertainment), thus we don't- really need to lose sleep over such matters!
Not interested in this sub standard Pakistani film. I am sure its just as useless as Pak tv.
All this hype and posting comments having digs at each other is just ridiculous. Film is a film for entertainment based on imagination and fiction. I think the producer and director should approach the people concerned in India and India should permit as a foreign film.I saw 'Khuda Gavah' It was just great.Banning Ranjhna just for Hidu Muslim love was also a very childish move.Let us grow up together.
why are you stupid people alway fighting with each other....every topic ends up in india vs pakistan......LOL
@ Tung
You have to be on crack to think that Agent Vinod types have the guts to be hanging around the badlands of Afghanistan. You guys look alike so it is easy for Agent Vinod to operate in Pakistan without raising suspicion. Indians don't need Afghanistan to conduct covert operations in Pakistan.
I don't think Govt. of India will stop the release of the movie but it will not get any buyer. Reason is simple it is an english movie and everybody who understand english are not fools. some might go and watch the movie only if there is no other english action movie is playing. . I am more interested in knowing how much business this movie has done so far. Has it recovered atleast the amount spent on this movie ??
@Zayyad: let's see what kind of news you read. So, please share the link for us.
@gp65: Google General vijay kumar Singh(ex Indian army General admitted to funding Baluch militants).
By looking at the comments here, i can see indians are not much different from Pakistanis. They HAVE taken it seriously. Calm down Indians its just a movie like Ek Tha Tiger, obviously alot better than that :D
After a long time, one of their movie breaks even and they talk of exporting it?
I dont care about india, please tell us when its getting released in uk n usa. There are thousands of thousands who will happily pay dollars n pounds to support local pakistani films man. Tired of boring senseless bollywood usual masala!
@Democrat: well said friend....but sadly we on this side of the border has placed oursrlves ....though wrongly...as on such high moral ground that others appear very very small.unless this tendency is curbed..your very sane voice will fall on deaf years. it is really sad that the only thing which give us indian a feeling if being SUPREME is the description of pakistan as a very lowly entity...remove this sense of stupidity and you would find that bothh countries are having similar scio economic shortcomings
bollywood is very talented.they make movies which hollywood copy. RAW is doing pure research work.BJP and RSS r devoting there energies for interfaith harmony.and nothing is happening in Muzafarnagar.
@Padma Lakshmee: So Veena Malik, a Pakistani comes to India and acts in Indian movies so that she can "entice excite gyrate seductive moves to tickle male testosterone" Pakistanis.
All those who advocates that Indian Anti- Pakistan movies allowed in Pakistan to get alternate view must also lobby for the release of WAAR in India. We can't go forward with hypocrisy.
We always welcome meaningful movies here in India.waar would have been a meaningful movie if they had, as a prelude, shown all the plots and anti India activities fueled by ISI in Kashmir and elsewhere in India .But still Pakistanis need not to feel disheartened. We have good viewership from the rickshaw pullers and paan bidi sellers who stay away from applying logic while watching movies. Waar would be a 'never before such pleasant ' experience for them.
@Democrat: so you Pakistanis are talking about freedom of speech?? LOL Talibani government won't like you. :D Your establishment can't tolerate ranjhhna yar and you expect us to see this low budget high octane India bashing and that too in fake American accent, please. Mate i wish raw was really capable of what you saw in waar and if they are then hurrayy.:D
@et please publish
@gp65
Thanks. I did infact, like most Pakistanis, watch Gadar on DVD. But the point I was making was that we should have the heart to not watch and listen to viewpoints that differ from our own.
Also, Pakistan is portrayed as a dictatorship in India which does not allow freedom of speech and other values afforded to citizens in our neighbour. Why then should you stoop to our level by banning films when you have such strong democratic traditions? (i.e. I can understand if Pakistan bans films but why India given its history?)
But most importantly, I was trying to make a point in that you cannot as a rational being assume that either one of the two countries is pure evil. Both our countries have wronged each other. It's high time we start focussing on what truly should be our number 1 priority: poverty alleviation and balanced economic growth!
Shame on you@Spock:
I would say bring it on. It will be under the comedy genre. It will be a spoof for many bollywood movies and It will be a mega hit.
ETBLOGS1987
@Democrat: Was Gadar released in Pakistan? No. At that time no Indian movie was allowed in Pakistan. So you saw it in a pirated DVD. I am sure some Indians will also watch a pirated DVD. Pakistan not only banned Agent Vinod which showed ISI in poor light but also Bhag Milkha Bhaag, Tere Bin Laden, Ek Tha TIger and Raanjhana which did no such thing.
Anyway this producer himself says he has not contacted Indian distributors. So where exactly will the movie be screened?
Secondly, the bulk of this movie is in English, so it caters to the same segment of people who watch Hollywood movies and people will compare it with other Hollywood movies when deciding which movie to watch. The huge patriotic fervor that this movie got in Pakistan would obviously be missing in India?
@yash: "indians are very small heart people, they wont allow this movie in india"
Does that mean Pakistanis are small hearted for not allowing Tere Bin Laden and Raanjhana?
Secondly the producer says he has not even reached out to Indian distributors. SO where will the movie be screened?
Incidentally Zinda Bhaag was released in US. Not seeing this movie released in US. Are they also small hearted? What abot UK where it has also not been released?
Movies are commercial business and distributing a movie is the job of a professional marketeer. Nothing to do with big or small heart.
ETBLOGS1987
@Zayyad: "the American Establishment and even an Indian General admitted to this."
Sorry. No Indian general admitted to funding insurgency in Pakistan even though your media has been deliberately lying to you about that. As far as American establishment - absolutely no one in American establishment has said it. Yes, an opposition Congressman Chuck Hagel who had no access to government confidential papers did express his opinion - not in the Senate or any official forum but in a thinly attended student forum. That Congressman then went to become Sec. Defense and part of establishment. He has never repeated that after he became Sec. Defense. In fact when Chuck Hagel's video surfaced to block his nomination as Sec. Defense, the state department promptly issued a rebuttal.
The evidence India has handed over to Pakistan about 26/11 is in public domain. If there is legitimate evidence of India funding TTP as this movie claims, why does Pakistani government not openly talk about what the evidence is? Why is Pakistani government and all political parties so desperate to negotiate with so called Indian agents?
ETBLOGS1987
@shash: "Film should be released in India so that Indian public can be given alternate point of view and can get familiar with nefarious activities of their government in neighboring countries."
The film's producer says he has not contacted any distriutors in India. It is unclear how the movie can be released in that situation. I hope that the Indian government does not act as childish as Pakistan government did in banning Tere Bin Laden, Ek Tha Taiger and Raanjhana which had nothing whatsoever negative about Pakistan or its agencies.
But if you think that this movie will be taken seriously as a narration of facts when even the producer says that is not what was intended, you are dreaming.
Given the fact that 70% of movie's dialog is in English, it will basically address the same market that a Hollywood movie addresses and will float or sink on its merit - assuming it is allowed (which I hope it is).
I wholeheartedly support by brother @Kumar We have enough films for our people each year and sorry we don't want low grade from our neighbor our idea of high grade is portraying sex laden subjects to have our actresses to wear skimpy outfits to display their female goods to entice excite gyrate seductive moves to tickle male testosterone so they can freely violate women on the street
@Ali: Waar is a great movie all the way. Better than any Bollywood has ever produced to-date! Oh really??? How many Film festivals has it been screened??? How many Special Jury awards has it won?? has it been nominated for Oscar or Cannes ?? What is its rating in rottentomatoes?? Please dont show IMDB because its voted by readers...
Also, how many Indian movies have you watched???I personally know 90% of them are crap but had Waar been an Indian movie,it would belong to that 90%...
Every parent thinks their child is the most cute and intelligent of all people in the world...But that doesnt make it true and also it doesnt make things look good when u tell the feelings loud...
For the love of God its a movie not wiki leaks.People please propaganda is the name of the relationship between Pakistan and India. If the other side is telling a story see it and enjoy don't make a fuss about it.Everybody should keep this in mind that 'One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter' .
So much for shinning India and its democratic traditions. When you can't even listen to alternative voice, how do you expect freedom of speech? Us Pakistani's have the heart to watch propaganda films like Gadar (to which cinemas across India heard claps), Border and Lakshya!
The point is that neither country's establishment have been good to each other. India is currently sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan. Even your generals have admitted to this.
But trust me when I say that we are the same people. We get along really well here in the UK. Why can't we do the same in our countries? Our countries should focus on development and helping each other as that way we can lift the millions stuck in poverty. And please like us Pakistanis have the strength to watch our movies, even if you disagree with the content
Please release it in UK. We are dying to watch this movie.
@yash: if u are large hearted u should have allowed agent vinod.... bas kuchh bhi bulwalo tum logon se...:)
This film should be shown in India simply because the Indians get one side of the story from their news media and generally despite the infestation of mullahs Pakistani media is generally more willing to take on all sides
ooh so when are you releasing Rajhanna and hollywood film G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
indians are very small heart people, they wont allow this movie in india
Show it Zaid Hamid...spare us the 'excitement', please! One director in India tweets and your stupid American accent is approved, is that all it takes?
@shash: sure. There are two equally valid points of view which deserves equal importance. One view is that the earth is flat and another is that earth is an oblate spheroid.
I really think Bilal Lashari lost it here. Waar is going great at local cinema and will do great in USA, UK and Gulf countries too. I think its about time Indians keep their propaganda movies to them and we follow them. I saw Aik tha Tiger as one of my friends recommended that to me and i had to give it to director for making such a laughing stock that even "Carry on Jatta" couldn't reach that level. :)
@Ali: And by commenting that you just showed your taste and ignorance :)
indians like to deny their obsession with pakistan!thats why their terrorist agents are in afghanistan
Who cares in India about Ram Gopal Verma anymore in India. He is a flop director here. His own market has taken a beating and he can say anything to get headlines somewhere for the time being...but yes, Pakis can take him seriously, who cares..lol.
We won't allow this anti-India movie to be screened in our country. Release it elsewhere like you're doing right now. No Paki propaganda movies in India. Thanks
Waar is a great movie all the way. Better than any Bollywood has ever produced to-date!
lets keep this propaganda movie outta india...... i would feel good if pakistani industry progresses but honestly plz keep ur movies to ur self..... thanks
when are you releasing this film in uk?
NO Indian will be interested to see this Paki propaganda movie. Please keep your confusion about who is causing your country's problems to yourself. The whole world knows the truth and am sure some of your guys knows it as well.
Please release "Waar" in India.....
Our so-called comedy movies arent funny anymore... I'm sure "Waar" will unwittingly tickle the funny bones of Indian audience.....
Please also include the scenes of Moosa Khan where the maulvi fights Hindus trying to destroy a mosque with guns :) Honestly it had me in splits the first time I saw it
No matter how many lies you say .. over so many years... Lies do not become Truths. ISI and PA have sponsored terrorism in India. Whereas India has not sponsored terrorism in Pakistan. So Indian movies are accurate whereas WAAR is made of lies.
The castle of Pakistan has been built on lies. You try to sustain it with more and more lies. That's why foundations are crumbling.
haha 4 tweets and you think all India drooling over it get a life
How dare he can tell like this ! This is just like knocking the door by a thief telling that ' I am a thief, can you open the door ' ?
It is amazing that Indian support of our insurgency is considered by some, as a conspiracy theory...the American Establishment and even an Indian General admitted to this.
We have enough films for our people to see each year and sorry we don't want low grade from our neighbour, which depicts our organisation as a vilain.
Film should be released in India so that Indian public can be given alternate point of view and can get familiar with nefarious activities of their government in neighboring countries.
Pakistan banned an Indian love story Ranjhanna for showing Hindu muslim love and they expect India to allow an ISPR funded anti -India propaganda movie? Wishful thinking.
We want to see movies like Zinda Bhaag, Shahid afridi etc which are meant for entertainment.
