LAHORE: Pakistanis, particularly those living in the United Kingdom, are ready to invest in Pakistan as they call the homeland a land of opportunities, says UK-Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Mohammad Razi Khan.

Speaking at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Tuesday, Khan underlined the need for more interaction between the two sides and asked the chamber’s office-bearers to organise a visit of its delegation to the UK for giving a boost to the trade ties.

Saying that the UK being the fastest growing economy in the European Union has a huge potential, he suggested that Pakistani businessmen could enter into joint ventures with their counterparts there.

The process of globalisation was bringing people closer and there was a need to learn from the experiences of each other, he stressed.

Khan asked the UKPCCI and LCCI to join hands and come up with a new strategy for moving forward. The LCCI should arrange roadshows in the UK that were a proven tool for promoting bilateral ties, he added.

LCCI President Engineer Sohail Lashari agreed that the UK, being an active member of the European Union, offered tremendous opportunities to Pakistani businessmen. However, he suggested that both sides needed well-directed and sector-specific moves to achieve the desired results.

He said Pakistan was particularly interested in transfer of technology and to achieve that expatriate Pakistanis would have to play their role.

Exchange of business delegations and organising single country exhibitions could boost bilateral trade. These marketing tools needed to be studied by the chambers and diplomatic missions of the two countries, Lashari said.

These are the areas where UK and Pakistan entrepreneurs could sit together and chalk out a comprehensive business strategy for mutual benefit.

Keeping in view the low volume of trade between the two countries, he stressed the need for more focused efforts to expand economic cooperation.

This process of bringing people and investment has to be addressed at several levels. We can try and bring investors into Pakistan but we need the support of govt of Pakistan. I know of people who want to visit and invest in Pakistan but our embassies are not helpful and reject visa applications.
