BAHAWALPUR:

A seventeen-year-old-girl allegedly committed suicide on Sunday by taking poison. Her paramour, who also took poison, is reportedly in critical condition at the district hospital.

Iqbalabad SHO Muhammad Yaseen Gujjar said the two had wanted to get married but their families had refused them permission. The girl’s father said she had gone out to get fodder for the cattle with her brother on Sunday. He later found her sitting with the boy in a field and brought her home.

The boy’s family told the media he had been seeing her for four years. They said they had proposed to the girl’s family but the proposal was rejected. They said the girl’s family planned to marry her off to a cousin.

They said the boy took poison when he found out that the girl had committed suicide.

@atif,

I too was mildly surprised by their choice of word for a news item as it sounded very tabloid-ish and I have never seen it used in well-known international newspaper/newsagency reports.

Just for my curiosity I did a Google News search and the only hits I found were in Indian news reports. Probably one of those words that are more fancied by Sub-continent reporters.

"Muhammad Yaseen Gujjar said the two had wanted to get but their families had refused them permission."

I think those two wanted to get "married" which is missing in report ET.
