ISLAMABAD:

Making it clear on Saturday that it would resist any move aimed at privatising national assets, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) moved an adjournment motion in the Senate seeking debate over the affairs of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

The adjournment motion, moved by Senator Raza Rabbani and Senator Saeed Ghani, sought discussion over matter of ‘urgent public importance’ following reports in the media that dozens of PIA employees posted in foreign stations were dismiss.

Expressing concern over what the movers termed ‘anti-workers policy’ of the government they stated that the government ‘wants to privatise the national carrier which is why it was laying off employees.

It was widely reported in the media that several employees posted at foreign stations are being sacked for their association with the PPP.

A statement issued by the PPP secretariat said that “It has learnt that the sacking process of 40 employees from the Dubai station, 30 from Saudi Arabia, 11 from UK, seven from Canada station and five from US station has been initiated.”

“Sacking of employees is political victimisation,” observed Senator Raza Rabbani said demanding the government to immediately put a stop to this and urged them to act rationally. “PPP will fight tooth and nail for the rights of PIA employees,” he added.
