An oncologist was kidnapped on his way to Benazirabad from Sanghar on Thursday while a policeman was arrested in connection with his disappearance.


The incident came to light late in the evening when Dr Shamshad Kamboh failed to return home at his scheduled time. “We kept waiting for his arrival in Benazirabad,” said the victim’s brother Maqbool Kamboh. “His phone was powered off when we called him and we came to know that he had left Sanghar with his driver.”

Later, Dr Shamshad’s car was found abandoned in the limits of Hala police station, district Matiari. He was a frequent visitor to Sanghar as he practiced at a clinic in Sanghar’s Tando Adam tehsil, as well as, in Benazirabad.

Maqbool further told the police that his brother had received a call in February in which the caller demanded extortion of Rs1.5 million. “We traced the caller whose name was Shamshad Rahu, a resident of Rahu Shakh village in Tando Adam,” said Maqbool. “A policeman at the SSP Matiari office was also found to be connected with him.”

He complained that despite registering acomplain at the Tando Adam police station no action was taken against the two men then. Meanwhile, the police arrested Umeed Ali Mirjat, a wireless operator at the SSP Matiari office. Tando Allahyar SSP Ikramullah Soomro, who is holding the additional charge of Matiari SSP, said that Mirjat and another suspect have been arrested for questioning.
