Crime: Man killed over water dispute

A case was registered on the complaint of Imran Azam, a cousin of the deceased.

A farmer was shot dead by his rivals on Monday over a water dispute.


Madina Town police said that Zafar Iqbal and Faqir Husain, residents of Gatwala, had had a dispute over irrigation water. They said a few days ago, Husain was caught stealing Iqbal’s share of irrigation water. Iqbal called a panchayat on Sunday that declared Husain guilty. Husain was, however, let go after he sought an apology. Police said on Monday, Husain and his sons Zahid, Abbas, Ramazan and Shahzad went to Iqbal’s field and shot him dead.

Two passers-by were also hit.The injured were taken to a hospital, where Iqbal was pronounced dead. The other two injured were identified as Sarwar and Abbas. They were later reported to be out of danger.

A case was registered on the complaint of Imran Azam, a cousin of the deceased.

The station house officer said the body had been sent for a post-mortem examination. He said police were looking for the suspects.
