The Foreign Office also summoned Deputy Indian High Commissioner to launch a strong protest against the incident.
Pakistani prisoner was badly beaten with a sharp object by a fellow inmate in an Indian jail on Friday in apparent revenge for a fatal attack on an Indian spy Sarabjit Singh.
Sanaullah Haq was being treated for severe head injuries in hospital in Jammu.
"He was rushed to Jammu Medical College Hospital in critical condition as he had suffered severe head injury in the attack. We are making arrangements for critical care ambulance to shift him to Chandigarh or New Delhi for treatment," said Rajni Sehgal, superintendent of the Kot Balwal jail where the attack happened.
The assault came a day after the death of Singh, convicted of spying and bomb blasts in Pakistan. He was hospitalised last week after two inmates attacked him in jail in Lahore.
India's government and his family maintain he was an innocent farmer and he is considered a martyr by many in India.
Several Indian states beefed up security in their jails. Many states already keep Pakistani prisoners segregated from their Indian counterparts.
Pakistan said the assault on Haq was "condemnable" and called on India to punish the attacker. India said it regretted the incident and promised consular access to Haq once his condition had stabilised.
The superintendent of the jail was suspended and an investigation launched in to the attack.

@Salman: If you want to hide the cause of death or to prevent a second autopsy
@Antebellum:
Why should there be a condemnation from them? They are Pakistanis and their main concern is what goes on in their own country Pakistan. Its not like Pakistanis have solved their own issues that they can start criticising others. sab say pehlay Pakistan.
@Salman: Doctors have made video of his postmortem if it is media hype then why don't your government ask for video recording .
pakistan is so stopping low to sell the kidney and heart of the dead man
it is the magnanimity of the indian people that only one pak terrorist in indian jail was attacked
please people stop the hatred
oh my god... pakistan has better medical facilities than India
@Salman: Oops! You messed up the math. Millions signifies a big number. It's implies six zeros at the very least. Would you like to revisit your assertion in the light of this knowledge ? I am a Kashmiri ( as in Kashmiri speaking , from the valley as opposed to pahari or punjabi speaking from wherever). It is absolutely clear that the Indian state comitted grevious human rights violations in Kashmir. But, to say tht millions were killed is the mother of all exaggerations.
Two wrongs do not make a right. Indian and Pakistani prisoners ought to be given secure cells to avoid such barbarities. Most are innocent poor fishermen who deserve to be repatriated immediately. Hopefully good sense will prevail, the two countries judiciaries will through confidence building mechanisms go beyond the reproachable behaviour of a few, bring to justice those responsible in both jails, take these tragic happenings as a lesson not to be repeated....
@VAIBHAV , DELHI: Well said highly respected sir and strongly agree with you.People on both sides must have to realize it that such these types of little mistakes and taking law in the hands may cause the biggest problems and difficulties in the future for Pakistan's and India's both countries' prisoners, tourists and visitors in Pakistan and India and both countries' people must have to refrain themselves from such these types of illegal and unlawful activities and both governments have to make it sure that in the future such these types of mishaps shall never happen by tightening the security in the jails and countrywide........
@VAIBHAV , DELHI: Well said highly respected sir and strongly agree with you.People on both sides must have to realize it that such these types of little mistakes and taking law in the hands may cause the biggest problems and difficulties in the future for Pakistan's and India's both countries' prisoners, tourists and visitors in Pakistan and India.....
You can not ask for yourself what you can not give.
GOVT'S OF BOTH THE COUNTRIES SHOULD TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO STOP SUCH INCIDENTS IN FUTURE..........only judiciary has the right to decide prisoners fate
many people were expressing their joy after attack on Sarabjeet in pakistan ....now same thing is happening in india after attack on Sanaullah......................
THE POINT IS THAT ONE SHOULD NOT GET CARRIED AWAY WITH FEELINGS AND SENTIMENTS..............PEOPLE SHOULD THINK BEFORE THEY REACT..........
@jssidhoo: "@G. Din: Nobody is always right but i will any day follow a man with Gandhiji’s track record . Whom will you follow ?" You must have lived or must be living in a different India than I. What track record? Gandhi, my friend, might have been a noble soul but he was a grand failure if we consider his track record. Even he realized that before he died. God gave us all a brain. Follow what your mind tells you and not shop out your decision making faculty to anyone else. @Naveen: "Indeed, Why don’t you shift your base to Pakistani prison as an Indian Prisoner or an Indian Prison as a Pakistani Prisoner to get first hand experience of this blind world, instead of making warcries in comfort of your room." Where do you see the war cries in my comment, my friend? It is totally up to you not to react when someone blinds you in one eye. And, by all means offer the other too to him. That does not stop the other from taking your other eye too whether you offer it or not. And he would be stupid not to, considering he already has an advantage. Even Gandhi realized the Gandhian stupidity but you will continue to brainlessly, lazily, unthinkingly parrot others' lines, to sound, oh so, peace-like and wise and nonviolent. Here is something for you to mull over, my friend: the whole Creation by God Almighty is based on violence. Even stars die and galaxies are gulped down whole. Guess, Gandhi was wiser than Him, eh? What presumptuousness!!!!!
The funny part is that Pakistanis are asking for transferring the inmate. If they are really serious about saving him, they should let him be treated in India at least he will be saved.
Indian here ... I am sad that indian jail authorities did not anticipate this. Action must be taken against both jail authorities and the culprit who did this. Its good to know that the jail warden has been suspended, security beefed up in all other jails housing pakistani prisoners. THis pak prisioner is stable and will not die.
Maybe they'll put acid in his water next time, "mistakenly" of course
For Indian people who are commenting in here: This is very example of how low India can get. You take revenge from a prisoner who cannot harm you in anyway and you call this justice? Shame on you people who have no value for human lives. I strongly condemn the attack by Pakistani prisioners on the Indian inmate, but is this how you call yourself civiliazed nation, by doing such an act? You accuse us for beheading your solider, if you've any prove, give it to me? Blindly listening to media and reacting is a perfect example of foolishness which most Indian people do. Singh had killed 100's of Pakistani families, what about that?
@An Indian: A very good example of how 'low' india can get to blame it's neighbour. Use your logic, why would Pakistan do that? Chopping our the organs of a dead man would not help anyone.
@omer: we 200 muslim Pakistani? First woory about your minorities
@imtiaz: Shame on Pakistan for killing Sarabjeet
All of Pakistan has woken up.
I criticize both Sarabjeet and the Pakistani prisoners attackers. There will never be an end to this.
Both families have lost a close family member. There is no sure way to know if any of these people are innocent or guilty of the crimes they have been charged for.
The Govt of India is fully responsible for the safety of not only Pakistan Nationals but all prisnoers in our jails and the Govt fails to provide safety to the prisoners then what is the difference between India and Pakistan, the law of the land must prevail otherwise the chain will have no end and only the poor people will be killed and killings will not affect the politicians and religious leaders of the two countries.Jago Jago majhab nahin sikhata apas men vair rakhna.
On both sides( India & Pakistan) politicians will be the beneficiaries. Its all about politics. SHOULD BE STOPPED.
@S Khan: Dear Mr. Khan only the politicians and religious leaders who are power hungry only wins and the poor loose nothing more nothing less.
http://ibnlive.in.com/news/sarabjits-stomach-bladder-heart-and-kidneys-missing-second-autopsy/389408-3-241.html
Say no more.
@omer: what happened or did not happen in Gujarat is an internal matter of India. and, I condemn what happened in the Jammu jail and what happened in the Lahore jail, where sarabjit was killed, and chamel singh was killed earlier.
any eye for an eye is not the justice either of us can afford.
however, I strongly believe that Indian Govt must disconnect all diplomatic, cultural, business, entertainment and sports ties with Pakistan.
I believe it is better in the interests of both these countries to live happily, as neighbors, but without interfering in each others matters, doing business etc.
The medical officer confirms that several organs were missing from Sarabjit's body. Now this lawless state demands justice.
I am anti-pakistani to the core. I do not want anything to do with Pakistan, but would condemn any violence against a pakistani prisoner in captivity. Rule of law cannot be violated. We cannot copy Pakistan and its mores. Indian government must suitably compensate the family of the prisoner. It is a moral responsibility to protect prisoners.
Deep sympathies to Pakistani prisoner & family members who was attacked in Indian Jail..In this case Indian government failed to protect the Pakistani prisoner which is unfortunate and commendable.May god bless him and let him recover from his injuries as soon as possible.
@Mikaail Ahmed: Dear bhaijaan if u guys condemned yester day abt attack on sarabjeet .Hv u seen yesterday how u guys enjoyed no one said it was wrong.
We know that is nt good n we would never support if india has started the same.
Bcas pakistan had started so we hv all right to to take this action
Hope pure fanatics in Pakistan will realize, that others have options too. but please INDIANS ! do not come down to standards set by fanatics of my birth country.
@Indian: or he should be sent Pakistan for better treatment and care.
This proves yet again that there is no difference between the two sides when it comes to Barbaric behaviour. We, the Citizens of South Asia should be ashamed of ourselves! What image are we portraying to the rest of the world?
@sohaib: @imtiaz: Crime is unavoidable in any society. The only difference is, in a civilized society, the perpetrators of crime are booked under the law and the victim provided with proper care. The attacker of the Pakistani prisoner is booked under the law and the prisoner is air lifter to a hospital. No such eagerness was observed in Sarabjit's case and my guess would be that the "ghazi" who killed Sarabjit will be let off easily.
@Pakistani: Who wants aman ka tamasha!!!
@G. Din: Nobody is always right but i will any day follow a man with Gandhiji's track record . Whom will you follow ?
yesterday when Sarabjit died you people had so much fun...now why you are crying..the person killed in jammu was a terrorist not a saint.
@Ghazali: Why not? We were not the first to do it? You provoked us; first you beheaded our soldiers, then you murdered Sarabjit. Don't forget the Kasab's and his ilk you sent on the murderous mission. And you expect Indians not to react? Isn't this your Sharia as well - eye for an eye?
Sarbajeet's killing and this attack on the pakistani prisoner is condemnable.Killingor attacking innocent people is cowardice !
@G. Din: "Gandhi was not always right. A whole world completely blind is far better than a world when the one with only one eye is repeatedly victimized by the one whose eye was spared by the foolish former."
Indeed, Why don't you shift your base to Pakistani prison as an Indian Prisoner or an Indian Prison as a Pakistani Prisoner to get first hand experience of this blind world, instead of making warcries in comfort of your room.
@omer Ji: . You stated and yet again we see the ugly face of indian democracy. apparantly Pakistan was the most barbaric state when it killed the terrorist sarabjit, but i am sure this act of injuring a pakistani in tit for tat would only be termed as a “reaction”. just like the 2000 muslims being killed in gujrat in reaction to 50 some hindus burned in train. . Your fairness in stating - what amounts to - that it is the Effect to the Cause is something that neither the Indian Secular Leaders in General and the Indian Muslim Leaders in Particular refuse to accept. . Only when these Leaders accept, address and remove the Cause will Peace prevail. . Of course Pakistani Leaders along with the Pakistan Media only Condemn the EFFECT, which, cannot improve the behaviour of the Victims. These Pakistani Leaders and Media must - while not condoning the out of proportion response MUST accept, address and remove the Cause so that when there is NO CAUSE there will be NO EFFECT. . Cheersd
Death of people to people relations among Indians and Pakistanis. From now on common Indians and Pakistanis won't be safe in each others country. The process of revenge at people's level has started and will take momentum. Going to be really scary.
@jssidhoo: "As Gandhiji said “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind “" Gandhi was not always right. A whole world completely blind is far better than a world when the one with only one eye is repeatedly victimized by the one whose eye was spared by the foolish former. @Ram: "As an Indian, I am ashamed." Go hide in a closet! You won't have much company.
The incident which happened in Jammu jail is complete nonsense and shouldn't have happened. Whether it was in the revenge or an isolate incidence has not been established. India has suspended one jail official and the person who attacked Sanaullaha has been identified as Vinod. India has also allowed consular access once the patient condition is stabilized.
Many people here are saying that India's reality has come out in the open and that India is not civilized etc, etc. The judgement on India's civility should only be given only after seeing the sequence of events and final outcome. There is so much difference between the attitude of Indian and Pak establishment. Pakistan is always on denial mode if you see the events of last 6 months.
@Antebellum: How can they aren't they Indians?
Such a regrettable childish behavior from Indian masses and government. Humanity which was pleaded yesterday is cursed today by the same people. How can it be a justice?
@Babablacksheep:
"@vasan: are you an Indian? can`t believe it"
And do you issue certificates on Indian citizenship? Can't believe there are some people who think there are sides to take on such illegal assaults.
All the indian who yesterday were talking about Civilized India..can you please answer this now!!!!!!!!
Totally SICK REACTION!!!!!
@qhn: yes pakistan should respond tough
@Pabitra: I'm really sorry for my previousu comment, bcz, I'd not gone through any news from Indian side. But the incident is really unfortunate & should be condemned by every rational human being. Wish him get well soon. My country will do its best to save his life & will definitely punish the culprit.
@vasan: are you an Indian? can`t believe it
yesterday pakistanis were celebrating
and few Pakistanis like me were sad on Indian prisoner's death but not anymore. how many more Indians in our jails left?
The only solution is a full-fledged attach on India!! Hindus don't deserve to rule a country!! Wait a little; we will revert soon, since our generals are engaged putting in order their financial benefits!!
i pray for early recovery for Sanaullah,,, and i am glad that "Aman ki Asha" has been exposed by this incident.
@imtiaz: Shame on you.
@Naeem: Answer for ur 1st question :- it is called mistake or crime. Ansewer for 2nd question :- it fallows 3 law of newton reaction over an action
we protected kasab for 3 years
@omer: Sirji, Hats off to your intelligence. You really are a gem of a wise person. Sir, you are 100% absolutely, fully, rightly right! Thank you sir, now remembering "50 some Hindus" who were burnt ALIVE in Godhra in 2002. So far your memory could never reach the facts preceding the riots in 2002. Now thank goodness that you have been able to jog your memory a little. Sirji, tussi gr8 ho! Sir, if you jog your memory more you will find many insights in the sub-contient's history, e.g. destruction of 1000s of temples, destruction of Nalanda university library,..... and all other crimes against HUMANITY. Der aaye, durust aaye!!
Indain Ex Army men has teached lesson not only to Pakistanis but also to indian goverment.Indian govt. should also react in same manner whever these pakis dare to do any such thing in future....
Someone please answer the following.
1) What do you call some who kills a Prisoner ?
2) And then, what do you call some one who kills a Prisoner in Revenge ?
@Aschraful Makhlooq:
THIS THE REAL PROBLEM THERE R PEOPLE IN BOTH SIDES WHO ALWAYS TRY TO HIJACK THE SITUATION ........
this highly condemnable .......both the countries should take immediate steps to stop these incidents in future................
@ABKhan do you think word Pakistan comes in definition of Civilization?
If anyone waited a bit - they would have seen that Indian Govt has apologised for this attack and Superintendent of Jail has been suspended. In less then 24 hours of the incident.
It is more then 7 days for Pakistan Govt to yet charge ANYONE from Kot Lakhpat Jail authorities for what happened to Sarabjit. No apology or reget for the loss of life of Sarabjit either.
Can one see difference between a civilised authority and one which is still to regret or take action against its erring officers?
Till yesterday there were loud posts on Sarabjit being terrorist and his death being what it should be. To such warriors (not to other Pakistanis) WHY expect different for a Pakistani Terrorist in a jail outside Pakistan?
This tit for tat nonsense has to stop for God's sake! How long will this go on??? France and Germany are now friends, USA and Russia are now friends, but Pakistanis and Indians, nah we are still at each others throats!! Get a life already and play some cricket!! Peace!
I strongly condemn this incident. They did wrong that doesn't means we are free to go wrong. But i am sure there will be proper transparent inquiry in this case.
Gulam Rasool"Kuldeep sharma" New Delhi
'Tom & Jerry' show between two 'civilized' 'independent' 'progressive' 'educated' 'nuclear' countries? Shame on rulers of both countries! Public is paying high price on each side of the border! Elections are near in Pakistan! We should avoid happening of New Drama in region at this critical and delicate stage!
I think western have been succeeded in their mission.... DIVIDE AND RULE... be unite Indian and Pakistanis ..
This was only reaction... If u started like this then we should end in same manner?
Both countries must understand and learn from world history; war is no solution to human sufferings. Build relations and work for the people
As you saw so shall you reap because first Pakistani prisoners attacked on an Indian prisoner and then Indian prisoners attacked on Pakistani prisoner.Giving punishment is only the authority of concerned law enforcement agencies/departments not the nation or prisoners.First Pakistani prisoners took this illegal and unlawful step then Indians prisoners.Stop such these types of illegal and unlawful attacks on the Indian prisoners so that Pakistani prisoners could be saved and secured in Indian jails.....
Neither side had the "moral high ground" anyway.
This type of jungle raj is what we get when govts abdicate their responsibilities . This is sad but is also a dangerous trend the earlier the two govt talk and get to grips with the situation the better . As Gandhiji said "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind "
As an Indian, I am ashamed.
@ABKhan: The world watching your civilisation in Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta etc.. 24/7
@qhn: we replied in the same way u did to innocent guy. if u want more then expect more reply in its extreme way from Indian side.
This is just plain nasty. It is shameful to India.
India has a democracy, by people, for people and of people but for Pakistani it is only 'creating troubles by indian people for indian people and of indian people'
Sometimes, mutual assured destruction will be a solution to problems with uncivilized countries like Pakistan.
@Khalid: Dear u attacked on indian we did the same. N then we made him hero our gov hs given his family more than 100 lacks indian rupees. Given job to his daughter there were more than 30000 people at his janaza. Will u do it the same for ue victim it ur turn now
@RQ: @Jat: oh you’re back XD
And ?
And thus 2 nation theory
Highly regrettable incident which should be investigated and guilty punished accordingly. But let me tell my Pakistani friends that there is a major difference as incident happened in India was not sponsored by the state.
Please stop this tit for tat games.the police should provide adequate security to the jailed men. Please dont think all Indians are bad. there are bound to be some rotten apples everywhere . Many Indians condemn this killing of our Pak prisoner.
@ajaath:
Civilized ???? Excuse me but you have no link to civilized world
@Jat: oh you're back XD
At least the indians cannot claim the moral high ground now. Shows their true face.
@S Khan: "Stupidity vs Stupidity who wins or lose" Can't agree more..... This was plain stupid move and barbaric on our side. Unfortunate. Not the way the prisoner should have been treated. But we are sure that the culprits will be brought to justice.......
Attack on sarabjit was highest level of inhumanity, right indians? Now that indian prisoners inside the jails have reacted, you say Pakistan got what it deserved and you are justifying it. So when there will be another response from Pakistani prisoners, tab kis moo se usey oppose karo gai. But then again, you people are not so just anyway, so expecting fair play from you is a bit too much to ask for.
We all Indians should condemn this attack. We have never been or should be barbaric just because our neighbor is. Shame on us.
Ok so after sarabjit attack, we got a lesson form india on how sarabjit's security was compromised. So what about the security of the Pakistani prisoner that has been compromised?? Will the indians here impart a lesson to their government as well? Certainly, they should have anticipated a reaction in indian jails containing pakistani prisoners. Or is that level of intelligence and objectivity too much to ask of an indian.
@dude based on your logic, now its Pakistan's turn to 'reply' back again. right?
@Salman: Elements who r anti nation they deserve that. Our gov is cool n calm nt like urs rember what they do with baloch think over it who r ur own. Why kashmiri
The attack happened in Kashmir jail. Now read the headlines.
India & Pakistan at it again like children in a playground - they've made tossing lives a game.
@sohaib: Most importantly where is our Biased Media especially GEO
Where are Beena Sarwar and Marvi Sarmad?
@Jat: Exactly, and instead, millions were killed in forcefully occupied Kashmir. That's how India works.
@omer: "and yet again we see the ugly face of indian democracy."
Democracy is a government for the people by the people and of the people.
What the heck has a revenge attack on a Pakistani prisoner got to do with Indian democracy? If you don't have logic, ask someone, instead of making inane comments.
This attack is highly deplorable. This attack should be taken very seriously by the Indian government and the people responsible for the attack must be charged under harshest of laws.
Also, immediate measures to be taken to protect Pakistani prisoners in other Indian jails.
One less terrorist in the world
Hope he survives ,,perfect case for medical tourism advertisement
@imtiaz: How do you feel now imtiaz?
Its definitely wrong act we know it well, but we don't have other options to send strong message to Pakistan. Pakistan having tendency to learn such kind of lessons, what to do? its not our problem , I hope rest of Indian prisoners would be safe in Pakistan jail.Talking peace with Pakistan is waste of time every Indian know about it except GOI.
@Antebellum: Why would Beena Indra Sarwar, Asma Thackeray Jahangir and Raza Ram Rumi condemn their own country?
@sohaib: yesterday u justfied abt sarabjeet n now why r u crying? Allah is seeing evry thing. ENJOY THE GAME.
@imtiaz: Dear Friend, It's really unfortunate that how a responsible media diverting the innocent people? Nothing happend as has published in this article. We should always have mutual respect rather than become scapegote by this media which are the frontrunner of the nasty political sides of both sides & of the evil extrimist groups'.
@Saad: who told you that its not crime?? its reply to pakistan in lesser way.
This incident is highly regrettable. Hope the Pakistani prisoner gets the best medical care and recovers fast.
This is an Indian retaliation... when you test our patience again and again and again we will keep our civilisation aside and retaliate heavily the same way you behaved.
Stupidity vs Stupidity who wins or lose
We learned frm pakistan n did the same. As our pakistani brother justified attack on sarabjeet.
@imtiaz Dont worry we wont kill him like you did to sarbajit.
wow....cool.....this is what they understand.....;)
The headline says it all: 'Pakistani attacked in Indian prison'.
Thank God Pakistan finally agrees that Kashmir is part of India. Pakistani commentors are also confirming.
awesome.....!! dont save him...he was a terrorist.....
Tit for tat
This should not be done. It is shameful, regrettable and should be condemned severely by all. Why should this Pakistani be paying the price for what someone else did elsewhere?
This incident is highly regrettable. I hope the prisoner survives and recovers fast. I also hope that Indian authorities book the culprits and punish them suitably
@imtiaz: Surely you forget the 93,000 prisoners of war Pakistani soldiers that were returned back to their families. Yes, we Indians are a very civilized nation, but unfortunately for us we have barbarians on our western border.
Shame on India for such brutal act.
Today its gonna be the "right" thing to do, Yesterday it was a crime. Typical Indian mindset.
I am waiting for the Indian comments who claims to have highest regards for the humanity.
this is the reality of indians!
Lets wait for statement from PM Manmohan Singh, whether he calls it "Barbaric Act"?
Who is India kidding? Sometimes their behavior is shockingly boorish.
His head was smashed by hammer.Attacker was a army ex-serviceman.The thing is Pakistan haven't behaved well in past few months. They beheaded our soldiers then killed Sarabjit Singh in cold blood. We Muslims have to answers these barbaric act of Pakistan. Please stop it.
That's a surprise by cheap Indians. Where is aman ka tamasha
Justice has been servered as per pakistani law.
Tit for tat. Good job. Make sure the guy is alive. Otherwise we are going to lose diplomatic plot here.
and yet again we see the ugly face of indian democracy. apparantly Pakistan was the most barbaric state when it killed the terrorist sarabjit, but i am sure this act of injuring a pakistani in tit for tat would only be termed as a "reaction". just like the 2000 muslims being killed in gujrat in reaction to 50 some hindus burned in train.
No condemnation from Beena Sarwar, Asma Jahangir, Raza Rumi and the likes this time?
and now where are 'civilized' indians?i guess There was much hue and cry over 'human rights' aren't pakistanis humans?
what a civilized nation india is, shame on them....
