According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the missile is capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads to a range of 900km.
An ISPR statement said that the missile incorporates series of improvements in range and technical parameters of the existing missile.
Director General Strategic Plans Division Lieutenant General (Retired) Khalid Ahmed Kidwai, while congratulating the scientists and engineers involved in the project, said that the improved version of Shaheen 1 has consolidated and strengthened Pakistan’s deterrence abilities manifold.
Earlier on February 15, Pakistan had conducted a successful test of the Hatf II (Abdali), which is a short range surface-to-surface ballistic missile.

I bet what are you doing in India (apart from bashing Pakistan). You are the best person to head IAEA, since you know more that everybody else, about nukes of Korea, Pakistan, America and Japan.
@Kaalchakra: " ... There is a concomitant mushrooming of secondary and tertiary industries, development, consolidation, and dissemination of scientific knowhow, grwoth in economic activity of every kind, exchange of scientific personnel – all of which seeps down directly to the common man. ... "
Ditto. With the Indian missile and space programs.
Great news! All these doubting people should know that such technical advancement has manifold benefits for Pakistan. There is a concomitant mushrooming of secondary and tertiary industries, development, consolidation, and dissemination of scientific knowhow, grwoth in economic activity of every kind, exchange of scientific personnel - all of which seeps down directly to the common man. So the development of strategic depth, strategic weapons, and strategic assets all ultimately aimed improving the lot of the common Pakistani. Of course, these also keep the common Pakistani safe from falling victim to Indian hegemony, which ultimately we all agree is the very reason for being a proud Pakistani.
@Pakistani: Just pray that a shooting match in the Korean peninsular does not turn nuclear.
Because the North Korean nukes that will kill Americans, South Koreans and the Japanese will be Pakistan's gift to the free world. Not only the bomb design, but the centrifuges for enriching Uranium and other nuclear tech were provided by Pakistan and delivered in the PAF's Hercules transport aircraft.
@Asad: I see more Indians commenting on this post than Pakistani’s. Why its a pain for you guys if our missiles never fail.
No pain for us, but I can see lots of pain coming your way. Read what a news report from Associated Press (AP) has to say Are NKorea's neighbors at risk of nuclear strike?
This is dated April 7, 2013 and I have been saying exactly the same here on ET comments many times, much earlier. If you want the links, just say so.
What kind of a future are you going to provide to your children ? Worry about that.
@sree: First get your facts right. Try Google as a last resort :P @Jat: I see more Indians commenting on this post than Pakistani's. Why its a pain for you guys if our missiles never fail.
Every country has the right to meet its defence needs..and Pakistan test firing a missile is part of their defence programme. Just one point I wish to make here......India always announces beforehand before it tests a missile....I dont see that happening in case of Pakistan.
@Jat: What happened dude, where you guys are going? We are always here and will be InshaALLAH
@Arijit Sharma.:
No, in Khalistan.
@Rizwan Ali: get ready to eat more GRASS, Praise be Allah
@Malatesh: CHINA
what is the north korean seril no for hatf the fourth??????
Pakistan only enemy is India, that's where our defence focus should be. It should not worry our neighbours where it is made or painted as long as they have the capability to resist and defend our motherland. We have the defence capability to run them to the ground and the Indians know that very well!!! As for all these 200 likes to anti Pakistan comments are doctored by the RAW Agents sitting in New Delhi working full times just doing that. The hatred will Make Pakistan stronger and stronger...Inshallh.
Same toy launched again to make few kids happy
@Usama: lets eliminate our Armed Forces, lets start firing food as you have said. this brilliant comment is beyond comprehension to me. ask those who are responsible to provide food. I guess we should put all scientists who are involved in missile development program behind the bars, as they do not allow food to reach common people
61 comments on the news of missile test and 3 on the murder of policeman deployed to protect Polio workers. May have been a good idea to condole his death at least.
I dont see any wrong in testing missiles one has purchased from hard bargain like giving nuclear tech for nodong aka ghauri. However when North korea test the improved version of Nodong aka Musudan and if it gets shot down by japanese or american anti missile batteries there should not be heart burn here in pakistan imagining a scenario with american ally aka India.
@Sonya
And you never will. I might add that I have never heard Pakistan admit mistake or apologize either - even the OBL debacle was blamed on failure of the Worlds intelligence agencies.
@sree "more than 20% of doctors in USA and UK are indians. " Please correct your statistics. I am a practising surgeon in the US. According to the American Medical Association statistics, 12.2% of doctors in the US are of Asian ethnicity, out of which about 2.3% are of Indian origin, 1.8% are Pakistanis. It is mainly doctors of Chinese origin that make up the majority of the Asian doctors in the US.
@Mr. Singh,
You should not be talking about "man up". Did you "man up" in 1984?
@sree: Joke of the century. Pakistani missiles never fails like indians does.
few days back india tested made in Russia but painted in India stuff and now the same people asking the origin of Pakistani missile. goofy
World's biggest gauranteed terms are "Sun will rise tommarrow" and "Pakistan sucessful missile launch".No failure ever!!
Its ironic to see comments from the Indian side :P debunking Pakistan missiles. For all the Pakistani Haters .. our missile technology is indigenous and better than India. You have imported technology Israhell :P
Honestly you people need to man up. Since 1947 how many Time You guys man up?
We want to see Pakistan developing ICBMs and I am sure on day Pakistan will have ICBMs Inshallah. Pakistan Zindabad
We need to start work15000 mile range missile with multiple warhead capabilities. This will reach any where on Earth. We need to start work on developing it ias it will help us in the geopolitical strategies of the 21st century.
Im Indian and I think it makes sense for Pakistan to carry out these tests but it doesnt make sense for Pakistan to not spend enough on education, infrastructure, energy etc. If you end up spending only on deterants and the military at the end of the day you dont really have much to protect.
Indigenous Indian and Pakistani military technology is so backward it isnt even funny. People will chest thump but the reallity is most state of the art technologies are imported. Only recently has india really tried to allow private companies to do research and development of military tech. Very little state of the art development has been done by govt. held institutions the world over.
And for those of you saying that we need to be like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal and bend over in front of India just to be on their good side, er no thankyou. Honestly you people need to man up.
@Avatar: You ar right.
Urm, last time I checked this was an article about Pakistan, IN A PAKISTANI NEWSPAPER! So all you Indians, thanks for your great concern about where our money is being spent. However, maybe you should keep the same thing in mind and first fix up your own slum ridden country and please stop worrying about us. Now BOUNCE out of our business!
What a pity that Pakistan painted the missile red. Choice of green would have been better.
@truthbetold: These countries even quarrel with India!
@Shahbaz Younis: "I can only say how genius u Indian r hahahahahaha". Look at Nasa, Microsoft or IBM just count how many indian engineers are woking there. more than 20% of doctors in USA and UK are indians. I know you can't digest it.
@Shahbaz Younis:
"I can only say how genius u Indian r hahahahahaha"
Hey brainiac, try finding Pakistan's name in this list:
http://ratings.fide.com/topfed.phtml
@truthbetold: Because we are the only nation in the subcontinent hat can actually stand up to the Indian oppression.
@Pakistani: Why all our neighbors today have turned so caring towards us
We don't know how much longer you will be there with us, hence the concern...
@Usama:
Not in this century. Got to fend off big bad India, don’t you?
@sree,
For a country that pumped billions to buy weapons from other countries and is the largest importer of weapons in the world, have you paid attention to the origin of your weapons and who benefited from the purchases (i.e., your corrupt politicians and army generals)?
@truthtobetold,
Indians love to lecture about how "good" India is and how Pakistan should "make peace" with India. Why do you need nuke when you are surrounded by "Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan or Myanmar, none of which have nukes, but they are not worried about India starting a war with them and taking over their country."
Are you worried about China and Pakistan? Go and make peace with them first and start feeding your poor before lecturing to Pakistan.
I feel so much pity for the Indian couterparts i.e Scientists and Engineers, i doubt their capabilities meanwhile i congratulate Pakistani counterparts for their manifold "Strtegic Depth" which they have achieved by the successful tesfire and addition to the nuke arsenal..
Cheers and Congrats to the Nation !
Yeah !!!!!
Keep it up boys ;)
@sree India should also think about buying excessive weapons from the UK and US. It's not helping the under privileged in India.
@Sonya:
You are apparently a pessimist who further worsens the disgust by comparing our missile tests with our lame politicians life styles.
Why all our neighbors today have turned so caring towards us, that they seem to be more worried about our needs than even what we are?
@ Sree & Waseem Sarwar
Made in China or North Korea - No matter – To Whom It May Concern!
@sree: only if it makes it less deadly. but, yes it is made in north korea.
@sree exactly it is copied from Russia not from North Korea or China :) " indigenous " I can only say how genius u Indian r hahahahahaha
@truthbetold: Superb maan... the world needs people like you.
@Malatesh Hopefully not Russia just like in your case
@Malatesh
Just for your information, National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM) is a dedicated research organization of Pakistan employing around 16000 individuals & doing continuous research in various engineering deciplines with specilities in the design and production of defence systems for the Pakistan Armed Forces.
@Rizwan Ali: " ... Greater Pakistan!!! InshaAllah ... "
Are you now seeking strategic depth in Saudi Arabia ?
Should have tested this missile on TTP....!!!
900 km is old story in nuclear warfare. Where are the ICBM's, Kiyani saab??
Great,Pakistan is following the foot steps of North Korea. Chinese have a real head ache on its western and eastern border with such great friendly nations.
@sree: you r wrong made in north korea and painted in pakistan
@ Zaid Hamid
A 'bankrupt' superpower. Where people will pray to Gods that missiles drop food supplies and nuclear bombs spread peace and prosperity upon detonation.
@Waseem Sarwar: You can only dream of Indian missile technology. It is indigenous and not copied from North Korea or China like you.
Stop missiles purchase and reduce defence budget! Give more attention on education and economic improvement of the country, it is not a time to fire missiles, we are bankrupt, deeply involve in curraption! try to improve living stander of the country citizen! unfortunatly people are living below line of poverity.
Pakistan should be careful in naming its missiles. Else like erstwhile conquerers Ghauri, Abdali, Ghaznavi etc. who laid waste Pakistan, the missiles, named after them, may end up doing the same.
@Waseem Sarwar: For you kind information, our missile technology isn’t made in China, its made in North Korea. :)
And the Americans. Japanese and South Koreans will soon be asking where is the North Korean nuke coming from ? And since when AQ Khan became an foreign policy expert ? How does he know so much about North Korea ?
@M Ali Khan:
"Pakistan cannot match India man for man, tank for tank, jet for jet – India’s defence budget is mushrooming and we cannot catch up. So focusing on a strategic ‘balance of power’ is important for us to deter any conventional war from happening."
How about thinking about the alternative, namely, make peace with India by giving up the anti-India confrontational stance?
Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan or Myanmar, none of which have nukes, but they are not worried about India starting a war with them and taking over their country.
@sree: For you kind information, our missile technology isn't made in China, its made in North Korea. :)
Ah yes, another missile which we will never use yet insist wasting money on.
Well done but I wish to hear news like we have opend an other university of international standards & a 250 beded fully equiped hospital as often as we hear of firing of Missilles......
They only work three days a week because of fuel strikes.
Congratulations pakistan you definitely need more billion dollar missiles than schools and hospitals
Made in China, repainted in Pakistan...
900 KMs, well done Pakistan, we always had and we always will have faith in you. But what exactly is the statement we are making? Shouldn’t rather be concentrating on our internal ills? How about spending the same on electricity, education, medication, energy and development, these are more live concerns and need much more consideration.
Pakistan is already bankrupt and now this test.This is no less than suicide in present economic condition.
When will we CIVILIANS be invited to witness a launch? When will we honest and law-abiding CIVILIANS be given a real time (overview) briefing of the missile's capabilities?
The time-line shows a tit for tat response to the Indian capability. Nevertheless, congratulations. Salams
Nobody is reporting about who is developing Pakistan's missile technology...!! Can anybody guess why?
I have not heard any Pakistani missile test and Prime Minister's or President's foreign trip has failed? They are always successful.
Having a strategic deterrent may seem expensive for the common man, but rest assured it is more cost effective than acquiring, say, 100 F-16s that have complex contractual obligations, tremendous scrutiny, and inevitable red tape that delays the deal and makes it more expensive.
Pakistan cannot match India man for man, tank for tank, jet for jet - India's defence budget is mushrooming and we cannot catch up. So focusing on a strategic 'balance of power' is important for us to deter any conventional war from happening.
That is what deterrents are for anyway.
when will we fire food into empty stomach and beat hunger
Greater Pakistan!!! InshaAllah
