Violent crime: Man beaten over money dies

Family protest against police for letting suspect go, wants murder section to be added in FIR.

FAISALABAD:

A man, who was brutally beaten up by his rivals one-and-a-half-month ago, died at a hospital on Sunday.

The family later protested against the police for their failure to arrest the suspects.

The protesters gathered on Susan Road and chanted slogans demanding that suspect be immediately arrested. Traffic remained suspected for more then four hours. They demanded that the police include the murder charge in the FIR, registered earlier.

Khalid, 25, a resident of Yousufabad Colony in Madina Town, had been at the Allied Hospital since the incident on February 13.

The deceased’s family said that Khalid had developed some difference with one Rizwan over money. They said Rizwan and three men stopped Khalid near his home and thrashed him. They then abandoned him in the street when he fainted.

Some passers-by informed the family and he was taken to the hospital, where doctors treating him said that he had several broken bones. They also said his kidneys had been affected and that his condition was critical due to internal bleeding.

Khalid remained in the intensive care unit before he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.



Ghulam Fareed, a cousin of the deceased, said that a complaint had been filed with Madina Town. He said police had arrested Rizwan, but let him go in a few hours. He said Rizwan now roamed around freely and the police had stopped investigation of the case

He alleged that Rizwan had told them to withdraw the case and had threatened to kill Khalid’s parents if they did not do so.

Madina Town Superintendent of Police Tahir Maqsood Cheema and Station House Officer Ali Akhtar arrived at the scene.

SP Cheema pacified the protesters and assured them that the suspect would soon be arrested. The protest was then called of.

Cheema told The Express Tribune that the suspect was arrested on assault charges and was later released on bail.

He said the murder charge will now be added to the FIR. He said police were looking for the suspect.

Groom shot dead by rivals

In Hafizabad, a groom was shot dead a few hours before his wedding ceremony. Police said Abdul Jabbar, a resident of Molo Chak, who had been working in Greece, had come back to get married. Shortly after he left for the bride’s home, two men from his rival family shot him, killing him on the spot.

The men fled. The body was sent to a hospital for a post-mortem examination. A case has been registered against the suspects. Police said Jabbar had had an enmity with a group who had accused him of rape. His family said some men had been visiting their home for few days and had been threatening to kill Jabbar. They said they did not report to the police earlier thinking that could affect the wedding.
