Between five to 10 per cent of the people in Pakistan suffer from thyroid condition, said a senior endocrinologist, Prof. Zaman Shaikh, at an ‘Awareness Seminar on Thyroid and Obesity’ held at Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Ojha campus, on Monday.
“Most people suffering from the disease do not know much about it,” said Shaikh. “A person suffering from a thyroid condition is prone to obesity, heart disease, depression, anxiety, hair loss, infertility, and a number of other health problems,” he added.
A well-known ENT surgeon, Prof. Umer Farooq, pointed out that the thyroid condition is the second most common hormonal disorder in Pakistan, after diabetes. Dr Farooq also mentioned that patients suffering from the disease can be saved from a number of complications if they are diagnosed at an early stage.
A free medical camp had also been set up at the seminar to treat people.
