KARACHI:

Investigators looking into the alleged rape of a 30-year-old Filipina maid in Clifton arrested three men on Monday, who are the brothers of a key suspect, I.

The maid was allegedly raped at her apartment in Gizri on Thursday. One of the key suspects, Mumtaz Baloch, is already in police custody and has been sent on remand till February 25. On Sunday, investigators detained Mansoor for letting the suspects into the building but have yet to ascertain if Mansoor opened the door to the building voluntarily or out of fear.

Investigation Officer, inspector Irshan Karim, told The Express Tribune that the investigation suggests that I has left the city and gone into hiding to avoid his arrest. According to Karim, the brothers have assured police of their full cooperation to trace the missing suspect.

“We do not know who was raped and what was the role of our brother in the incident,” said one of the brothers. “If he is guilty of this crime, then he should be punished and we will try to assist the police in tracing him.”

Police are still waiting on the chemical examination report to establish if the maid was raped. A chemical examiner, Dr Fazal Elahi, told The Express Tribune that the report will be issued soon and that the delays are usually due to the extra burden of work.

Pakistan needs to really think about its law regarding women and sexual abuse and maybe even take notes from India and it's recent changes in legislation for improved protection of women.
