KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) came down hard on the Sindh police inspector general on Friday over inaction by his department against a Rangers personnel who had unlawfully detained four citizens and then extorted Rs100,000 from the relatives for their release.

“If, the Sindh IGP cannot take action against such persons, his presence in the province is highly questionable,” observed the Chief Justice Mushir Alam while heading the bench.

Phulan Khatoon had gone to the court against the Rangers officials, saying they had allegedly illegally detained her son Ghazi Khan along with his friends Mohammad Ameen, Sher Afzal Khan and Shahzad Khan.

She alleged Rangers Colonel Suleman and his subordinates - Sher Afsar and Riaz Taman - took the four men from Lyari on August 1, 2010. Later, Sher Afser extorted money for their release, but did not let them go.

The judges had ordered police to take action against Sher Afser, who was also terminated from service, but no action has been taken so far.

On Friday, the bench ordered the police chief to appear in person and explain his position on March 12.
