KARACHI:

Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah said that “certain elements” were busy destabilising Karachi, in order to push elections beyond schedule. However, the government would join the people to thwart these activities and ensure that elections are held on time.

Shah expressed the concerns as he hosted a dinner for British lawmaker George Galloway at the Chief Minister House late on Monday. Shah told Galloway that the Pakistani government was thankful to its British counterpart for its support in strengthening democracy in the country.

The chief minister observed that it was the first time in the country’s history that an elected government would complete its constitutional tenure, despite the conspiracies that had been hatched against it. Galloway concurred, and added that democracy was essential for resolving problems in Pakistan. He added that the UK would play its role in promoting peace and tranquillity in the region, and particularly in Pakistan. He also told Shah about his visit to Mohenjodaro. Shah later presented Ajark and a cap as a souvenir to the British MP.
