Police said investigations had revealed that SI Ashraf’s son Ijaz and his accomplices Ifikhar and Sharafat had been peddling in hashish in the area for seven years.

GUJRANWALA: Four policemen, including a sub inspector, were suspended from service on Sunday for allegedly supporting the SI’s son in his narcotics peddling.

Saddar Superintendent of Police Syed Arshad Junaid issued the notification directing the police to arrest the SI’s son and his accomplices.

Police said investigations had revealed that Aimenabad SI Ashraf’s son Ijaz and his accomplices Ifikhar and Sharafat had been peddling in hashish in the area for seven years. They alleged that they were protected by Ashraf and three constables at the police station.

On Wednesday, they said, Ijaz had ordered seven one-kilogramme packets of hashish, which were to be delivered by one Shakeel from Peshawar. They said Ijaz had told his father that he would collect it from Shakeel on Aimenabad Mor. He had asked Ashraf and Constables Kaleem Liaqaut, Anser Mehmood and Iqbal to open fire at Shakeel’s vehicle as soon as he handed over the packets. On Wednesday night, when Shakeel handed over the packets to Ijaz, police shot at him and arrested him.

The shooting was reported to the station house officer by some residents of the area. The SHO, they said, directed another police team to reach the scene. On seeing the team arrive, Ashraf produced three packets of hashish saying that he had seized them from Shakeel, and had him arrested. An inquiry into the arrest, ordered by the SP, later revealed that Ashraf had withheld four hashish packets and not named his son and his accomplices in the FIR.

On Sunday, the SP issued suspension orders of the SI and the three constables believed to be his accomplices and directed the police to arrest them.

Man claiming to be CPO’s brother held

In Gakhar Mandi, Gujranwala district, police arrested a man pretending to be the brother of the city police officer who allegedly tried to get some robbery suspects released.

Police said a case had also been registered against the man and his brother for threatening Gakhar police investigation incharge, Sub-inspector Zahid Shah with dismissal from service.

Shah and his colleagues Amir Farooque and Rashid Ali were planning to raid a house to arrest robbery suspects Sarfaraz and Awais when Hakoomat Ali called up Shah and claimed to be a brother of the CPO. He told Shah not to arrest the suspects and said he had talked to senior officers in this regard. He also threatened the policeman with dismissal from service if they arrested the suspects.

Shah requested the caller to visit the police station. Mohammad Khalid Nazeer, a resident of Kotli Matwalian, Kamoke, came to the police station, claiming that Nazeer was his brother and he would settle the issue.

Shah realized that Nazeer was not CPO’s brother and arrested him.
