Some residents of Mohammadpur Ghota caught a police inspector on Sunday when a police team broke into a house saying that they had been informed about an illegal betting den being run there.
They, however, found no betting den at the house.
A Kutabpur police team broke into the house of a Cantonment Board official, Muhammad Akram, and arrested his brother Usman accusing him of running a betting den.
When the policemen were taking him away, more than 20 neighbours gathered at the gate and stopped the police.
This led to an argument between the police and the people, who caught one of the policemen, Inspector Hayat, and locked him in a room while his other colleagues fled.
Later, some Elite Force personnel arrived and asked the residents to let Inspector Hayat go with them.
Initially, the residents complained that policemen harassed citizens and broke into their houses without any evidence against them. They accused the police of highhandedness and said that they had made it a norm to harass innocent citizens this way. They said several such incidents had taken place in the area earlier, too. They later let the inspector go after the Elite Force personnel assured them they will look into the matter.
