LAHORE: Health experts have warned people to switch off gas heaters before going to bed to avoid risks of fire and casualties.

Speaking with the media on Sunday, the Shaikh Zayed Medical and Dental College principal and Shaikh Zayed Hospital dean and chairman said public must observe safety measures while using gas heaters to avoid mishaps which might lead to death. He said the treatment of gas-affected patients was very complicated. He said that before going to bed, people should ensure that room heaters are properly switched off and the gas supply is closed at the source to avoid leakages.

Jinnah Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Fazlur Rahman said that majority of the people used gas heaters in airtight rooms in the winter which resulted in gas poisoning and might lead to death due to the absence of adequate fresh oxygen intake. He said that a ventilator must be kept open for adequate intake of oxygen.

Former Heavy Electrical Complex managing director Ashique Ali said the combustion of natural gas produced carbon monoxide which was hazardous to life. He said it destroyed red cells in the blood which maintained the oxygen level. He said the lowered level of blood oxygen adversely affected the entire human body, especially the brain, liver, kidney, muscles and living tissues.
