LAHORE:
The Steel Melters Association on Saturday issued a statement, protesting the “indefinite suspension of electricity” to 89 furnaces by the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco).
The association said supply had been suspended without any notice. It demanded that the company provide them electricity for at least 16 hours a day. The association spokesperson said that they had held negotiations with company representatives and were assured that electricity would not be suspended entirely. He said that the measure had been taken to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity to domestic consumers during the first 10 days of Muharram. He said that Lesco was facing a shortfall of 2,200 MW and the company had decided to shut off electricity to steel furnaces to help deal with the increasing shortfall. The spokesperson also said that there would be no planned shut downs, however, closures because of the Metro Bus Service will continue.
