KARACHI:

Taking stock of the government’s apathy towards providing treatment to senior medical officer of the Peoples Medical College, Shaheed Benazirabad, the Sindh High Court on Saturday issued notices to provincial health secretary and medical superintendent of the college.

The court had taken notice of a complaint by Aziz Bano, wife of Dr Bashir Ahmed. Bano claimed that her husband, a BPS-18 employee at PMC, has been suffering from Hepatitis-C, esophageal varices and liver cirrhosis. She added that three medical boards constituted by the health department had recommended that Dr Ahmed be treated at Aga Khan University Hospital, as PMC lacked advanced treatment facilities.

The applicant complained that no steps had been taken for the treatment of her husband, whose health was deteriorating with every passing day. She prayed to the court to arrange for her husband to be treated either within the country or abroad.

“The right to life is the fundamental right of every citizen,” remarked SHC Chief Justice Mushir Alam, before converting the application into a constitutional petition. He then forwarded it to SHC’s Hyderabad bench for further hearings and decision.
