At the two men’s final debate before November 6 elections, Romney largely embraced Obama’s positions on Pakistan and, in a departure from his frequent criticism, said he did not blame Obama for troubled ties between the nations.
“It’s widely reported that drones are being used in drone strikes, and I support that... entirely and feel the president was right to up the usage of that technology,” Romney said at the debate in Florida.
Romney said he believed the United States should “continue to go after the people that represent a threat to this nation and to our friends.”
But he added: “We’re going to have to do more than just going after leaders and killing bad guys, important as that is.”
Obama, while rarely speaking publicly on drones, has stepped up strikes by the unmanned, remote-controlled weapons against extremists in areas of Pakistan where the government has limited control.
The drones have been deeply unpopular in Pakistan, where the government calls them a violation of sovereignty and opposition figures charge that the strikes breed more extremism by inadvertently killing civilians.
The drone issue has further strained relations, which nosedived last year when Obama ordered a secret raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad.
Romney voiced concern about the Haqqani network, a militant group in Afghanistan that US officials have linked to Pakistan, and worried over the power of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence agency.
“It’s a nation that’s not like others and it does not have a civilian leadership that is calling the shots there,” Romney said.
Asked by moderator Bob Schieffer if the United States should “divorce” Pakistan, Romney supported continued ties but -- in line with legislation approved by Congress -- called for more conditions on US assistance.
“No, it’s not time to divorce a nation on Earth that has 100 nuclear weapons and is on the way to double that at some point, a nation that has serious threats from terrorist groups within its nation,” Romney said.
“But we do need to make sure that, as we send support for them, that this is tied to them making progress on matters that would lead them to becoming a civil society,” he said.

You know if Romney said he'd want to divorce us, I'd be pretty happy. Because if our own government cannot divorce America after all the backstabbing it has done, then America should do it itself. I as a Pakistani want nothing to do with America.
True words and until that problem is fixed your never going to have peace in the region. All those civilian junkets to India, Afghanistan or wherever really don't amt to a hill of beans.
In nutshell what he said was "Pakistan is not civil society." Read between line guys.
how sad and very sad, with all the nukes i am being treated with contempt. Dump the nukes but be counted as an honourable nations like Malaysia, UAE, and so on ------------
This is the value of Pakistan in us eyes.If our politician have small amount of sense they should suicide.every institute of pakistan are going low.I wonder how this country still running.Just i pray for Allah to save this country otherwise this country is going towards total failure.Live long Pakistan!!!!!
Whoever becomes President makes no difference for the Muslims around the world. Things will only become worse when Romney takes over !! Iran will be attacked and the 3rd WW will begin.
@Amer: Cricketing Country: Century of Nukes ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Team Captain Gen Kayani. Is any fixing going on?
I just hope this fool doesn't get into the White House, he has a small brain, huge greed and a bigger mouth. Many in Pakistan have also requested the US to stop the "aid", this money doesn't help the people of Pakistan, it helps the rulers stay in line with their greed.
@lovePak: Hand cramped up yet?
This is what we get for 50 years of being best friends, lol. Nation of 100 nukes!
And I suppose I pose a threat to America by condemning drone strikes and the killing of innocent men, women and children by America across the globe.
Pakistan has always been a nuisance and is unstable. About time the next US President (whoever it is) to order the inevitable with the help of Russia, India and Israel.
Democracy cannot be spread the way it was in Iraq or Afghanistan or Libya. Democracy was forced into these countries. Democracy is an ideology that gradually takes shape with time. It took centuries for Europe to embrace it. Democracy has to be spread the way it was in Germany and Japan, with gradual assistance and supervision. But in Libya, it was forceful, brutal, bombed into existence, and that is why we have a horrible state of affairs in Libya now. A shame because it had the highest standard of living in the whole of Africa.
America still has that "White Man's Burden". Their over-obsession with democracy has led to them believing that they have been tasked to spread it and are made to falsely believe that they are the ones suffering in their quest to "save the world". The reality that Americans cannot bear to hear is that Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and other supposed terrorist countries were the ones bombed into chaos, they are the ones who are homeless, destitute, poor and desperate.
@antony: Respect is commanded not demanded. A little soul soul searching, without emotions, is needed on our part too.
Pakistan only seems to have nuisance value
This, from the man who believes Syria is Iran's route to the sea. Poor Americans.
"Not a time to divorce a nation with 100 nuclear weapons". That's what it all comes down to - an international rogue that needs to be tolerated because of the nuclear weapons, till such a time it is perceived it isn't just a migraine but a brain cancer.
It is upto Pakistan to not let itself become a brain cancer for the world, instead take help and stop being the migraine.
"White House hopeful Mitt Romney said Monday he would maintain drone strikes in Pakistan if he defeats President Barack Obama and impose conditions on aid to the nuclear-armed nation."
No respite for Pakistan no matter who wins the election (Romney or Obama) only difference will be in degree of sanctions!!! Time for Pakistan to shed its image of breeding ground for terrorism and gets on its own feet by working on its economy..... Some amount of ghairat won't hurt.....
“No, it’s not time to divorce a nation on Earth that has 100 nuclear weapons and is on the way to double that at some point, a nation that has serious threats from terrorist groups within its nation,” Romney said." Is this the only significance of Pakistan in his foreign policy??? Seems Obama has better understanding on foreign policy!!!
Its a shame to represent a nation of 180 million to say nation of 100 nuclear weapons and nation that has serious threats from terrorist groups and hence cannot divorce relationship . As if the 180 million people dont have any more value than the 100 nuclear weapons . Also "aid should be given to pakistan to lead them to becoming a civil society" .. Is whole 180 million people not civil ? ..Total shame as pakistanis has 50 years of ally status with US and countless pakistanis inter mingled with american society and yet the result is shameful!
Extended weather forecast for Pakistan calls for more of the same - sudden and unpredictable showers. Imran Khan's friends better beware.
As usual blind, biased American President. When will they really try to understand. Instead of speaking to the politically and ethnically charged scums that the US Embassies and Consulates seems to entertain (because they think they are those in 'power'), they should speak to people in business and who have successfully run enterprises in Pakistan and who are bold enough to speak their minds (without fear that their US visas will get cancelled). Such people have successfully navigated the ills and hindrances in Pakistan and hold the same core values as other civilized nations on Earth...
Far too much misinterpretation, far too much interaction with people of the wrong ilk has shaped American thoughts about Pakistan.
