‘Minimum wage raised to Rs9,000’

Minimum wage for unskilled labourers has been raised from Rs6,000 to Rs9,000 from July 1.

The minimum wage for unskilled labourers has been raised from Rs6,000 to Rs9,000 from July 1, Labour Minister Haji Ehsaanuddin Qureshi said on Wednesday.


Talking to delegations at his assembly chamber, he said the government had raised the grant for the marriage of the daughters of labourer and women workers from Rs70,000 to Rs100,000. He said the grant on the death of an industrial worker had been increased from Rs300,000 to Rs500,000. He said 7,000 children working at brick kilns had been registered in schools in Lahore and Kasur districts while Rs75 million in interest-free loans had been provided to other workers. 5,700 brick kiln workers were also provided NICs.
He said the government was spending Rs4.31 billion to provide healthcare facilities to labourers and their families.

Qureshi said programmes had been launched to improve maternal and neonatal healthcare. He said labour hospitals will be upgraded and new social security hospitals will be established at Sheikhupura, Rahim Yar Khan and Jhang. He said a hospital management information system was being introduced at a cost of Rs107 million.
