KARACHI:

A cousin of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) MPA Manzar Imam, and 10 others were killed in Karachi on Saturday.

Imam’s cousin Syed Jamal Faisal, 36, was shot dead in Orangi Town’s Sector 5. Police officials said that the attack was carried out by two men on a motorcycle. Jamal worked at the Sindh High Court. He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where a number of MQM leaders and workers gathered. Imam told The Express Tribune that his cousin is a victim of target killing as he had no personal enmity with anyone. He also demanded the arrest of his cousin’s assassins.

However, the police said that initial investigation suggests that he was killed over a personal dispute since he reportedly had a conflict in the area.

West Zone SSP Amir Farooqui said Faisal was targeted shortly after he left his home in Orangi’s Chishti Nagar to go to work. He said that the culprits first tried to intercept the victim and later shot him dead.

The situation in Orangi Town was tense and commercial activities were partially suspended. However, a heavy contingent of Rangers was deployed and no fallout of the murder was reported.

Jamshed Khan, who worked at Baqai School of Nursing Staff, was shot dead at Anu Bahi Park. SHO Shaukat Shah said that the deceased was also a retired lieutenant and lived in Defence Phase VII. He said Khan was returning to his home from his office in Baqai Hospital in Nazimabad No. 2 and was climbing down a pedestrian bridge when a stray bullet hit his chest. His family refused to comment.

The other targets of Saturday’s shooting spree included two container truck drivers.  One was shot dead and another injured within the vicinity of the Awami Colony police station. Police officials said that the unidentified armed men opened fire at the two container trucks resulting in the casualties. The two men lived in Gulshan-e-Hadeed. SHO Javed Brohi said that the motive behind the incident has yet to be determined.

Jamal Baloch, 28, was killed and his brother, namely Jalil was injured in a firing incident in Daud Goth within the limits of the Baldia Town police station. Police officials said that the incident took place after a dispute erupted over an illegal electricity connection. The alleged culprit, Khalid, reportedly escaped but the police have detained his brother, identified as Elahi Buksh.

Jumman Shah and his wife Nida were shot dead in their house within Khokhrapar police remits. Police officials said that Shah was a labourer and belonged to Tando Mohammad Khan. He had married his wife of his own will 11 years ago and did not have a cordial relationship with his in-laws. Police officials said that the victim’s brothers-in-law might have killed the couple after entering into their home when they were asleep. The couple had three children.

Shahzad Memon, 27, was killed after he was shot seven times near his home in Jamshed Quarters. Abu Turab was found dead near Malir River. He lived in Malir Jaffer Tayar Society and was shot thrice before his body was dumped.

A body of a woman, believed to have been killed eight days ago, was found from Sikandar Goth. The body was taken to the Jinnah hospital. It was suggested that she may have been strangled to death.

A policeman was killed and another was injured when assailants opened fire at a police mobile in Shah Faisal Colony. Paye Khan, 45, was gunned down in SITE in a separate incident.

Clash of the titans

Tension gripped Ferozabad on Saturday as two groups opened fire at each other over a property dispute. The authorities have arrested around 30 men from both groups and are investigating the case. ASP Ghulam Murtaza said that the clash started when the men tried to claim rights over a 1,600 square yard plot in Block 7, PECHS.
