KARACHI: Miffed at the recent statements on team selection by chief selector Mohsin Khan, Pakistan one-day and Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi is considering limiting his role with team selection for future assignments.
Mohsin, following a protest by the Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA), claimed it was not only the selection committee that was responsible for team selection for the England tour but the captain, coach and the management as well. Mohsin also asserted that he wanted to include Karachi’s Asad Shafiq in the side but coach Waqar Younis and captain Shahid Afridi over-ruled his inclusion and opted for Umar Amin and Azhar Ali, a claim that left Afridi fuming.
“Afridi was unhappy because he feels he had little say when the team was selected for the tour of England. He has asked the chairman to take action against the chief selector for violating the code of conduct,” a board official told The Express Tribune. “As a result, he’s considering playing a minimal role in team selection because of the latest statement by the chief selector.
“Afridi has asked to give him a side only chosen by the selection committee and assured his hundred per cent efforts to take out the best from it.”
PCB mulls action against chief selector
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official added that the board is reviewing Mohsin’s remarks to take action against the chief selector. “We’ve also received complaints from Waqar besides the one from Afridi against Mohsin and the PCB might send a show-cause notice to him if he is found guilty of breaching the code of conduct.”
The PCB’s legal adviser Tafazzul Rizvi confirmed that he is yet to receive any instructions by the board regarding the show-cause notice. “I haven’t yet received any directives from the board regarding sending notice to Mohsin,” Rizvi told The Express Tribune.
