KARACHI: The Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) launched a protest against the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) yesterday, alleging the board of being biased against Karachi players for the national team selection.

Top KCCA officials including president Sirajul Islam Bukhari, secretary Ijaz Farooqi and vice-president Khalil Ahmed Nainitalwala demanded justice from PCB for Karachi players.

“In past, national team used to have around ten Karachi players because merit was the only requirement then,” said Nainitalwala before adding that omission of Karachi-based players was also affecting the team’s performance, including the dismal show in England.

“Leading performers in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy were snubbed because they were from Karachi,” he said while giving examples of Asad Shafiq (1,104 runs), Khurram Manzoor (620 runs), Khalid Latif (769 runs) and Tabish Khan (61 wickets).

“They’ve selected Azhar Ali because he’s from Punjab but scored just scored 445 runs in the trophy.”

The KCCA vice-president termed the selection committee a ‘dummy’ and said that the team was chosen with the consent of the PCB chairman.

“Chief selector Mohsin Khan should resign because he has no powers due to which he is unable to do justice with the players,” said Nainitalwala before adding that with two Tests remaining, Pakistan can still make a comeback with proper selection.

Club players stage protest

Dozens of players from various KCCA zonal clubs held a protest demonstration outside Karachi Press Club (KPC) against the PCB for ‘discriminatory’ team selection. They burned bats and were holding placards in which they demanded President Zardari to remove Ijaz Butt from the PCB and ensure team selection on merit.

They also demanded inclusion of Faisal Iqbal in Test team besides calling for selection of Tanvir Ahmed in playing eleven for the third Test.
