Furniture shop fire: Fire brigade accused of negligence
Protesters said fire followed a short circuit caused as a truck hit an electricity pole holding 1100 KV power cables
FAISALABAD:
Dozens of people staged a demonstration on Railway Road in Kamalia to protest what they said was negligence of the district Fire Brigade in controlling fire at a furniture godown in the area. Valuables worth hundreds of thousands of rupees were burned in the fire at furniture shops in the area. The protesters said the fire followed a short circuit caused as a truck hit an electricity pole holding 1100 KV power cables. They said fire quickly spread to the nearby furniture shops as well, burning all furniture kept at these stores. They said fire brigade was contacted and informed about the incident in time but there was no response. The protesters who had held a sit-in at the Railway Road and blocked it for traffic said the fire was then put out by them on their own. A fire brigade official speaking on condition of anonymity admitted that a complaint was received about fire on Railway Road. He said that there had been no response because there was no fire fighting vehicle that could be sent to the scene.
