Seraiki bank federal subject, not provincial: Gilani

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Tuesday that the Seraiki bank will be made according to the rules and that it was a federal subject and not a provincial one.

President Asif Ali Zardari had earlier directed the government to establish a Seraiki bank.

Addressing the media during a graduation ceremony at the University of Central Punjab, Gilani stated that the Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) had no right to details of visitors to the PM house and that the person asking for such details needed to stay in his limits.

Speaking at the ceremony, the premier said that since ANF was under federal government with its own federal minister, federal secretary and acting deputy general (DG), therefore, any person writing to the Prime Minister of Pakistan cannot write like this.

Talking on the law and order situation of Punjab, the premier said, “To protect the life and property of the people is a primary duty of the state and law and order is a provincial subject".

"We cannot interfere but of course our law enforcement agencies are here to assist the provincial government and will extend them full cooperation", he added.

On talks with India regarding the withdrawal of forces from Siachen, Gilani said, “Whenever I have met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh I have told him that we must sit and discuss all core issues including Kashmir, Siachen, Sir Creek, water and terrorism”.

He said that the Indian PM had agreed to talk on all issues and this was the first time in the history of Pakistan that these issues were discussed openly by a prime minister.

On being asked if he thought that the Afghanistan and Bannu incidents were related, Gilani said that the government condemned both attacks.

Gilani refrained from answering questions relating to his son Ali Musa Gilani’s name popping up in different cases.

The premier also saluted the soldiers trapped in Siachen adding, “We pray for them to be ok”.
