MIRPUR: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir High Court has served a contempt notice on the state government for replacing the incumbent deputy chairman of the state’s accountability bureau by disregarding its stay order.

The court has set January 30 for the AJK government to respond to the notice.

The AJK government had appointed Chaudhry Aurangzeb as Deputy Chairman of the AJK Ehtesab Bureau in place of the incumbent Haji Muhammad Ashraf, who had been appointed to the office for a three-year period on December 22, 2010.

Sensing the move, Haji Ashraf had filed a writ petition in the AJK HC on January 3 against the anticipated appointment of Chaudhry Aurangzeb in his place allegedly on political grounds.

He took the plea that his contract appointment was for three years and that the government could not remove him before the stipulated time. However, the government pressed ahead with the replacement move and suspended Haji Ashraf’s three-year contract.

At this, the state’s high court started contempt proceedings and ordered status quo in the matter.

Meanwhile the AJK government, upon receiving the contempt notice, has reportedly suspended the official notification about the appointment of Chaudhry Aurangzeb as deputy chief of Ehtesab Bureau.

If it is really Azad Kashmir (Independent Kashmir), then it is an infringement on the sovereignty of Azad Kashmir. Better to rename Azad Kashmir to a meaningful name.
