While the setting up of parallel investigations into the memo scandal has created a sense of conflict between the government and judiciary, Nawaz Sharif questioned, on Saturday, the wisdom behind the executive’s decision to task a parliamentary panel with the job to begin with.
Referring to a statement by President Asif Ali Zardari that the government would respect the findings of the parliamentary committee on national security on Memogate – a statement that tacitly suggested that a Supreme Court-mandated judicial commission’s verdict on the same issue would not be accepted – Nawaz said: “We want to make it clear that the Supreme Court cannot work on the whims of an individual. The entire nation is standing by the apex court. And if anybody tries to sack the Supreme Court, the nation will revolt.”
He expressed regret that the government had not yet backed off despite the court’s ruling in favour of a judicial probe.
The head of the principal opposition, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), told a convention of party workers in Quetta, that this move was a continuation of the policy followed by the government for the past four years – that is, not honouring any ruling of the apex court. This, he said, shows that the incumbents have no regard for the country’s superior judiciary.
He also questioned the motives behind the rush to control investigations into the memo – and why the government had not pushed its committees to investigate other important issues such as the US commando raid in Abbottabad, the terrorist attack on PNS Mehran, the murder of journalists Saleem Shehzad and Wali Khan Babar or the Raymond Davis issue.
Regarding early elections, Nawaz said: “We’re ready to contest, if the elections are held ahead of schedule.”
Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani said last week that he was trying to narrow down differences between President Zardari and Nawaz and arrange a one-on-one meeting between the two leaders.
Nawaz said he wasn’t aware of this ‘expected meeting’. “I found out through the media that Nawab Raisani is trying to arrange our meeting.”
Meanwhile, as differences emerged in its provincial leadership, the PML-N elected Provincial Minister for Services and General Administration Sardar Sanaullah Zehri its provincial president for Balochistan and Naseebullah Bazai as general secretary of the PML-N.
“The leadership has ignored workers who struggled for the party during the dictatorship. We will not accept this election,” workers led by Nawabzada Jhangez Marri said, clearly annoyed by Zehri’s appointment.
PML-N chief Nawaz was scheduled to address party workers after the election – however, he was seen storming out of the hall following the chaos that erupted between workers of two provincial leaders.
The disgruntled leaders will now look towards the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) if their concerns aren’t addressed immediately, sources revealed.
After hectic efforts by the party’s central leadership, Nawaz returned to the hall to address the media and his party workers, and reiterated that the general elections must be held without further delay.

wisen up mr nawaz sharif, its still few months before the elections and stop playing the righteous politician. dont we all know who attacked the supreme court while u were in power.
The arrogance of the Sharif Group, resulting ultimately in the oppression of a common man, can only be countered by giving Province Status to the South Punjab. It will set every thing in the right direction.
Is his voice really representing 180,000,000/-??? Citizens with balanced heads and approach are aware what is going on behind the scenes. Memo is nothing more than a nonsense. A party which is only ruling Punjab due to turn-coats must first bring its own house in order and stop playing with the process of democracy and its system. Just imagine, our Judiciary is now on a Watch List (according to the Foreign Office - USA). If we really care and love our country then all types of conspiracies must stop before all Comes Tumbling Down.
Mr Elder Sharif is actually Mr Flip Flop . But does he do it on Purpose or because he doesn't know that he doesn't know., I don't know. Maybe our TV anchors would know.... Lol. But, as the 'great' American ex functionary (Rumsfeld...) says There are known knowns; there are things we know we know.
We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we don't know we don't know.
But our anchors make millions by talking about things they don't know they dont know and their employers keep paying them for talking about the unknown unknowns. So let them talk about Mr Elder Sharif, the great known unknown. Mr Zardari however is the unknown unknown.
The above comments are not meant to be funny or "jokish'
all nawaz wants is to become prime minster at any cast peole think that judiciary is indebted to him for the long march for its restoratio so any decision by the court wil be biased supreme court has been put in difficult position bu Nawaz he talks about respect to the court but then his brother refuses to accept the authority of the elected presiden and both have paralysed the government any decision by a court on a worthless unsigned paper will not be respected by anyone
Is not the judiciary doing exactly that? Working on whims of an individual!
Mian Lahoori, you are addicted to changing positions; from a cozy to frosty relationship with military and from assault to comfy with SC/judiciary. Haven’t you learned a lesson from your oiwn mistakes; you dig a hole for someone and you could be the one to fall into.
I wish if Mian Saheb could ask SC to hear the petetion of Asghar Khan on MEHRAN BANK scandle, pending for 18 years now. OR if they can request to expedite the final verdict on the dis-qualification of Shehbaz Sharif. He is. perhaps, holding the Guinness record for the longest serving CM on the basis of Apex stay-order. Its high time for the honourable Chief to stop thumping chest and do some just, serious and non-controversial work.
Mian Saab, Stop playing behind judiciary, which may side PTI any next moment. Compete govt in next elections. Memo was a conspiracy of establishment and you shot yourself in foot by giving it ownership.
What is he talking about? Making issues out of non-issues seems to be his habit. That's why PML-N is fast losing support.
PML-N leader NS cannot control and hold proper elections in his own party and still claims that he is ready for early elections!
