KARACHI:

Amid mounting political uncertainties, the leaders of the likeminded group of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q have started meeting different political parties and groups in Sindh. They are apparently looking into the possibility of alliances in case the elections are held ahead of schedule.

A four-member delegation of the party led by Senator Saleem Saifullah had a meeting with the leaders of National Peoples Party (NPP) here on Saturday and exchanged notes on the prevailing political situation.

Sources in the party said that the PML-Q leaders suggested an alliance for the elections and asked NPP leaders to join hands. “The election will be held in 2012,” Saleem Saifullah is reported to have said. “Many groups are willing to join us. Therefore, we should also enter into an alliance in order to give the ruling party a tough time,” sources quoted Saleem Saifullah as having said. But the NPP leaders apparently preferred to parry any decision by saying party leaders needed to be consulted.

Other MNAs belonging to the likeminded group who were present at the meeting included Arbab Zakaullah, Kishanchand Parwani and Dr Ghulam Hyder Sameejo.

The PML-Q (Likeminded) leaders further said that they would also hold meeting with other parties and leaders including Pir Pagara, Liaquat Jatoi, the Mahar brothers of Ghotki.

After their meeting, Saleem Saifullah told the media that they have come to visit the Jatoi brothers to discuss the overall political situation. “We have not yet decided on an alliance, but the possibility cannot be ruled out in the future,” he said. The chairman of the NPP, Murtaza Jatoi, said that they have not yet decided on joining any group. “No doubt we are coalition partners of the Sindh government, but we oppose those government policies which are against the wishes of the people,” he said.

Musharraf’s party

On the other hand, the All Pakistan Muslim League of Pervez Musharraf has decided to hold public gatherings on December 24 and January 8 in Sukkur and Karachi, respectively.

This was announced by Ghulam Rasool Unar, the provincial leader of the party, while addressing a press conference.
