The Block is located at the borders of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces (between the districts of Karak and Mianwali). The discovery is estimated to accrue huge foreign exchange savings which could range in billions of dollars at the current oil price trend and thus contribute towards the nation's endeavor to reduce dependence on imported energy.
Federal Minister for Petroleum & Natural Resources Dr Asim Hussain congratulated Lt Gen (R) Raza Muhammad Khan, Managing Director/CEO of Mari Gas Company Limited (MGCL) on the significant discovery.
MD, MGCL called on the Minister Thursday at Minister's Office. Secretary Petroleum Muhammad Ejaz Chaudhry was also present on the occasion.
Dr Asim Hussain congratulated Mari Gas Company on this achievement and assured him that his Ministry would facilitate MGCL’s efforts regarding exploration and production of hydrocarbons in the country.
The Halini Well was spud on January 7, 2011. The well has been drilled up to a depth of 5,350 meters. During the initial short duration tests carried out, the well flowed at the average rate of 1,700 barrels/day Crude Oil of API gravity 26 at 32/64" choke size.
The flow rates from the well, are expected to increase with further testing and stimulation treatment which is planned to be conducted, shortly. The prospect is estimated to spread over a large area and the Company is planning to drill additional wells to delineate the exact extent, size and reserves potential of this oil discovery.
The Karak Block was granted to MGCL, as operator and 100% interest owner, on April 14, 2005. Subsequently MOL Pakistan Oil & Gas Company B.V. (an E&P Company of Hungary) acquired 40% interest share in the Block from MGCL.
MGCL had also made a gas/condensate discovery last year in its 100% operated Sujawal Block in Sindh which is being put on test production by installing early production facilities. MGCL also discovered the first ever oil reserves in Balochistan when it's Ziarat well flowed Crude Oil which is currently being evaluated/appraised for bringing it on production. Other recent discovery of gas by MGCL in its Sukkur Block's Koonj Well has also been put on test production for gas supply to SNGPL.
It was also decided that 44 MMCF/D gas from Mari Deep Reservoir would be provided to SNGPL.

I want to explained that all the working team of Mari Gas Company is consist of Civillian people. Only Managment is by retired Army officers.
Congratulations to all my Pakistani brothers and sisters. InshAllah Pakistan will become a prosperous and wealthy nation.
@Pragmatist:
read article proper.
""The flow rates from the well, are expected to increase with further testing and stimulation treatment which is planned to be conducted, shortly. ""
@antanu: not only pakistanis on this site ( ;
Mixture of Indians and Pakistanis.
After digging 5.3 kilometers, the output is only 1700 barrels a day?? It would be better if they keep digging. Eventually it will reach a Texas oil well at the other end and you can have all the oil you'll ever need.
well done MGCL ... congratulation to MGCL team/-
Thanks be to ALLAH alone!
This is for all Pakistanis :)
Mari Gas Company is mostly owned by Fauji Foundation so obviously a "highly qualified" retired general will be the CEO. @ M.A.S. give civilians some credit. There's nothing about military men that makes them the "best managers". If that was the case, every major institution in the world would be run by "military men".
@Khurram Mohiuddin: What is to be your objection? He has worked some.
Let us hope it not another Dhodak!
Well friends, the discovery is in District Mianwali, while region falls in KARAK Block. It may not be appropriate to relate it with District Karak / Kohat. Having said that, the discovery is for Pakistan and Pakistanis.
Thumbs up for MGCL!
Its a good news in bad situation. The well is located in Karak well inside Pakhtunkhwa. Congratulations to all Pakistani. Thanks to the hard work of Labor, engineers and management of the company. NO CREEPY CLAIMS UNDER THE EARTH PLEASE.
alI tanoli: stop being a racist. khurram: general is there because military men of Pakistan are the best managers. Plus sitting up there just need quality brains (which they have) and a good hand to sign off the papers. U dont need to be an engineer or a geologist for tht.
Well done Mari Gas, nice effort by the team.
Thanks be to Allah!
Why is a general who has no qualification in geology or petroleum engineering heading an oil and gas exploration and mining company?
I thought some one million barrel a day. khoda bahad nikla chua.
@ Jameel Thank god its not in chanab nager and by the way in karak and mianwalli all pathans lived for centuries and speaks two lang Pushto and Hindko.
Actually its in Mianwali district .
@Jameel: Whether it is Punjab or KP,it is Pakistan ,the oil explored is ours, the 190 million Pakistanis.
@Jameel Its at the border which is above the earth but it doesnt exist under the earth...:)
There is no such thing as 'between KP and Punjab'. Its either in KP or Punjab.
