Matt Damon has revealed that he turned down the opportunity to star in the 2012 comedy Ted, despite finding its screenplay so funny that he read parts of it aloud to friends during dinner.

In an interview with GQ for its 2026 Men of the Year cover story, the actor discussed missing out on the lead role of John Bennett, which eventually went to Mark Wahlberg. Damon admitted that he had been extremely impressed by the script but ultimately overthought the decision.

“I have never had this experience where I laughed so hard reading a script,” Damon said, recalling how he took the screenplay to dinner and shared several passages with his friends.

However, his initial excitement turned into hesitation when he began considering whether the talking teddy bear was actually the most important character in the story.

Damon explained that he became overly analytical and eventually talked himself out of accepting the role. Looking back, he also recognises that the decision meant missing an opportunity to spend time in his hometown of Boston.

The actor revealed that the production was scheduled to film there, which could have given him approximately six months at home. Reflecting on the personal significance of that possibility, Damon mentioned his late father and acknowledged that he now wishes he had considered the opportunity differently.

Despite his regret, Damon has no complaints about how the film turned out. He praised Wahlberg’s performance and believes the actor was the right choice for the character.

“Mark’s great, and the movie’s great and I would not have made it any better,” Damon said.

Directed by Seth MacFarlane, Ted became a major box-office success following its release in 2012. The film later spawned a 2015 sequel and a prequel television series on Peacock.

Damon has since continued working on major productions, including Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which has become another significant project in his career.
