Scarlett Johansson has spoken about the challenges of playing her undisclosed character in The Batman Part II, describing the role as difficult to understand and develop.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight published on Wednesday, the actress discussed her upcoming projects, including The Exorcist: Martyrs and the DC sequel.

Asked which role had pushed her furthest outside her comfort zone, Johansson singled out her part in The Batman Part II.

"Probably the role in The Batman," she responded. "It gave me a lot of existential angst for some reason."

Johansson explained that she struggled to work out how to approach the character, although she could not identify precisely what made the process so difficult.

"It was very hard to figure out. I don't know why, whether it was just the role or was just where I'm in my life, or what's going on, but it was just hard to crack it. And that's all I can say about it. It was a tough role in a lot of ways," she added.

Director Matt Reeves confirmed in May that Johansson had joined the sequel to his 2022 film, which stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman. However, the production has yet to reveal which character the actress will portray.

Other newcomers to the cast include Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch.

Principal photography briefly paused in October after Reeves stepped away to attend to a family matter, according to DC Studios.

Later that month, Steven Soderbergh joined the production to help Reeves complete the final stages of filming, with the studio's support.

The Batman Part II is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on February 18 2028.
