Judge Judy retires from onscreen work after more than 30 years on TV

Judge Judy is stepping away from onscreen work after more than three decades on television.

The 83-year-old TV personality, whose real name is Judy Sheindlin, revealed that she will retire from appearing on camera when her Amazon Prime Video series Judy Justice wraps its current run in October. Sheindlin plans to remain active behind the scenes, shifting her focus towards producing.

Despite leaving the screen, Sheindlin stressed that she is not retiring completely. “I’m still going to be creative,” she said, making clear that she intends to continue working in television through production and other projects.

Sheindlin first became a household name with Judge Judy, which premiered in 1996 and ran for 25 seasons before ending in 2021. The courtroom series made her one of the most recognisable figures in daytime television.

She subsequently launched Judy Justice, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2021 and brought her trademark courtroom format to streaming.

After more than 30 years in front of the camera, Sheindlin's decision marks the end of an era for one of television's longest-running courtroom personalities. However, her continued work as a producer means she will remain involved in creating television even after she steps away from appearing onscreen.
