Inde Navarrette has revealed that she thought she had “bombed” her audition for Obsession, despite ultimately landing the lead role in the indie horror hit.

Navarrette, known for playing Sarah Cushing on Superman & Lois, discussed the audition with writer-director Curry Barker during a panel at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11.

“I did a Zoom. I thought I bombed it,” Navarrette said, recalling the virtual audition and chemistry read for the role of Nikki.

Barker, however, had a very different reaction. He said their first Zoom meeting was “pretty electric” and that he immediately saw something in Navarrette’s performance.

“I was lucky enough that he saw something in me that I didn’t feel like I had shown,” Navarrette said, encouraging other aspiring actors not to assume a poor audition means they have failed.

Obsession follows Nikki, a hopeless romantic whose attempt to use a magical wish to make her crush fall in love with her spirals into chaos. The film also stars Michael Johnston, Cooper Tomlinson and Megan Lawless.

Made on a reported $750,000 budget and filmed in just 20 days, Obsession became an unexpected box-office success following its May release.

Navarrette is now preparing for another major role, having been cast as Rogue in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men movie. Meanwhile, Obsession is streaming on Peacock and available to rent.
