Elizabeth Holmes’ facial expressions and speech have been analysed by body language experts following the release of the trailer for You Can See Everything, a documentary about the convicted Theranos fraudster.

The nearly 80-second trailer, directed by Lance Oppenheim with comedian Nathan Fielder, was released after a surprise screening at the Telluride Film Festival.

It shows Holmes speaking to Fielder while maintaining prolonged eye contact and repeatedly insisting that she is being truthful.

"I'm not that person," she says. "I can promise you that. I don't have anything to deceive you on. Of course, I'm not deceiving you. I'm engaging with you as a human being. Why would I deceive you? There's no reason for me to do that."

When Fielder asks whether she is "being real right now", Holmes replies, "I'm always being real."

Body language expert Patti Wood said Holmes’ raised eyebrows and wide eyes could be intended to create an impression of openness, but questioned how long the expression remains.

"It almost looks like she's got tape at the top of her forehead," Wood said. "It's an expectation to look like she likes the person and that she's being open and honest in her statements, but because both eyebrows in the open eyes stay plastered on her face along with a plastered-on smile, we know it's not real. It's not sincere. It's deception."

Clinical psychologist Denise Dudley described Holmes’ sustained eye contact as "gaze maintenance", while behaviour analyst Traci Brown highlighted her low blink rate.

"At that moment when she says, 'I'm always being real,' her blink rate is six per minute. We need to be between 15 and 20 when we're relaxed. So she's either staring him down or under threat here, or both," Brown said.

The experts also discussed Holmes’ smile, voice and language. Wood described her lowered voice as an attempt to create "the illusion of sincerity and intimacy".

The trailer also reveals Holmes rocking her baby’s bouncer during the conversation. Dudley said the combination demonstrated what she described as "tight, screwed-down regulation".

You Can See Everything is due in cinemas on October 16.
