Is ‘Disclosure Day’ finally coming to Peacock? Here is what we know

Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day is heading towards its expected Peacock streaming debut, but fans should be careful with claims that an October 9 release date has been officially confirmed. 

The film, which arrived in cinemas on June 12, stars Emily Blunt as meteorologist Margaret Fairchild and Josh O’Connor as cybersecurity expert Dr Daniel Kellner. Their characters become connected after uncovering evidence surrounding extraterrestrial life and a government effort to keep information about alien contact hidden from the public. Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo and Wyatt Russell also feature in the cast.

Written by David Koepp from a story by Spielberg, Disclosure Day marks the filmmaker’s return to extraterrestrial science fiction following his long history with the genre. Spielberg previously explored alien encounters through films including Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, while Disclosure Day approaches the subject through government secrecy, public trust and the possibility that humanity has been kept in the dark about alien intelligence.

The film has already completed its theatrical and premium video on demand stages. It became available to buy and rent digitally on July 21, while its physical release followed on August 25. Current streaming trackers show that it is still available through digital purchase and rental rather than as part of a subscription streaming service.

There is also a separate Disclosure Day related programme already available on Peacock. Full Disclosure: Reality Behind Spielberg’s Disclosure Day is a 25 minute documentary featuring interviews with Spielberg, Blunt and others involved with the film. That programme should not be confused with the feature film’s subscription streaming release.

At the box office, Disclosure Day earned $241.3m worldwide, including approximately $116.6m domestically and $124.7m internationally. The film was produced for a reported $115m budget.

Critical reception has remained generally favourable, although audience reactions have been more divided. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the movie at 79% from critics and 69% from verified audience ratings. Early reviews praised Spielberg’s return to science fiction and highlighted Blunt’s performance, while some critics felt the story did not fully deliver on its ambitious premise.

The film’s eventual Peacock arrival would give viewers another opportunity to revisit Spielberg’s latest attempt to examine humanity’s response to the possibility of extraterrestrial life. For now, however, October 9 should be treated as an expected or reported date rather than a confirmed Peacock release date. Universal and Peacock will need to make the official announcement before that date can be reported as final.
