Big Little Truths sets up a possible Big Little Lies Season 3, revealing major changes for Madeline, Jane and Celeste

Liane Moriarty’s new novel Big Little Truths could offer a glimpse at what HBO’s potential third season of Big Little Lies might explore. The sequel is set 10 years after the events of Big Little Lies, the novel that inspired HBO’s Emmy-winning series.

Although Big Little Lies Season 3 has not been officially ordered by HBO, Moriarty has confirmed that the new book will lay the groundwork for the potential season. The novel also incorporates elements introduced in Season 2, including Mary-Louise, played by Meryl Streep in the television adaptation.

The story follows Madeline, Jane, Celeste, Renata and Bonnie as they navigate major changes in their lives while their children become teenagers. Their past returns when the kids begin learning more about the circumstances surrounding Perry’s death and Bonnie’s role in it.

A central mystery involves Melody, a new history teacher who has been exploiting vulnerable students and connecting them with her predatory husband, Seth Montclair. Jane’s son Ziggy ultimately delivers a presentation exposing Melody’s actions, forcing the adults to confront the danger surrounding their children.

The sequel also gives each character a new storyline. Madeline faces family upheaval while supporting Ed through cancer treatment, Jane deals with her complicated relationship with Tom, and Celeste begins a new romance while navigating Mary-Louise’s struggles. Renata confronts painful family history, while Bonnie continues to deal with the emotional consequences of Perry’s death and eventually seeks help for her drinking problem.

With Big Little Truths now expanding the characters’ stories, the novel could provide a roadmap for where Big Little Lies Season 3 may go if HBO moves forward with the series.
