Hayden Panettiere and Michelle Trachtenberg’s ‘Ice Princess’ feels heartbreaking after their deaths
Tim Fywell remembered both actresses as dedicated young stars whose bond helped define the beloved 2005 Disney film

Hayden Panettiere and Michelle Trachtenberg are being remembered together following Panettiere’s death, with their shared history in Ice Princess taking on a deeply emotional significance for fans of the 2005 Disney film.
Director Tim Fywell has paid tribute to both actresses, recalling the very different personalities they brought to the set while praising their talent, dedication and warmth. Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36, while Trachtenberg died in February 2025 at 39.
In a statement to Variety, Fywell described Panettiere and Trachtenberg as an "amazing pair" and reflected on the experience of working with them when they were young performers.
Fywell remembered Trachtenberg as "kooky" and fun, highlighting her infectious laugh and her ability to bring both humour and emotional timing to her performance. Panettiere, meanwhile, was recalled as determined and highly focused, particularly when it came to the demanding skating work required for the film.
Panettiere played Gen Harwood in Ice Princess, a talented young figure skater whose rivalry with Trachtenberg’s Casey Carlyle eventually develops into friendship. Trachtenberg played Casey, a teenager who becomes determined to pursue figure skating despite initially being expected to follow an academic path.
The film also starred Kim Cattrall and Joan Cusack, with Cattrall playing Gen’s mother and Cusack portraying Casey’s mother. The story centred on Casey’s decision to follow her passion for skating and her growing relationship with Gen.
Fywell recalled Panettiere as "plucky and determined and perfectionist", saying she spent hours practising her skating and remained focused on delivering truthful performances. His memories offer a glimpse into Panettiere’s early career, years before she became widely known for roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise.
The director also acknowledged how technically difficult the production could be. Despite the challenges, he remembered both young actresses with affection and described them as delightful to have around during the shoot.
The renewed attention surrounding Ice Princess comes after Panettiere’s sudden death, which has prompted fans to revisit some of her earliest performances. Social media discussions have particularly focused on the fact that both of the film’s young leading actresses are now gone, bringing a new emotional weight to scenes that audiences first watched two decades ago.
Trachtenberg died in February 2025 from complications of diabetes mellitus, while Panettiere’s cause and manner of death remain under investigation following her death in South Carolina. Authorities have not established a final cause of death, making it important to distinguish confirmed findings from speculation surrounding her passing.
For fans who grew up with Ice Princess, the film now stands as an unexpected record of two performers who began their careers young and left lasting impressions on audiences.
