Hayden Panettiere’s death has raised new questions after Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, was reportedly found inside the South Carolina apartment where the actress was discovered unresponsive. The detail has drawn attention because emergency dispatch audio also referenced a suspected overdose and cardiac arrest, although authorities have stressed that her official cause and manner of death have not yet been determined.

Panettiere, known for Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, died on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36. She was found unresponsive at a residence at Judson Mill Lofts in Greenville, South Carolina, where she had been temporarily staying. Emergency services received a call at approximately 1:51pm, and she was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:32pm after resuscitation efforts.

According to TMZ, Narcan was found in the apartment. The medication contains naloxone, which can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose by blocking the effects of opioids on the brain. However, the discovery of Narcan does not establish that Panettiere had taken an opioid, nor does it confirm that the medication was administered to her.

That distinction is particularly important in this case. It was reported that two ambulances were dispatched to the apartment and that responders mentioned an overdose during communications with dispatchers. The outlet also reported that it remained unclear who, if anyone, received Narcan because more than one person was reportedly present at the residence.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office has completed Panettiere’s autopsy, but the examination has not provided an official cause of death. Authorities said no signs of trauma were discovered that would have contributed to her death. Additional studies are still required before the cause and manner of death can be established.

The overdose theory therefore remains unconfirmed. Dispatchers reportedly referred to a suspected overdose during the emergency response, but dispatch information is not the same as a medical examiner’s final determination. Toxicology and other investigative findings are expected to play a role in determining what happened.

Panettiere had previously spoken publicly about addiction and recovery. In interviews and her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, she described struggles with alcohol and opioid dependence, as well as postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter Kaya in 2014. She also discussed entering treatment and working towards sobriety.

Her history has inevitably brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding her death, but it does not establish what caused it. The presence of Narcan is a significant detail in the investigation, yet it cannot independently confirm an overdose.

Panettiere’s death was confirmed by her family, with her father Skip Panettiere describing her as an "incredible light" and a force of nature who brought love and joy to those around her. Her death leaves behind her 11 year old daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.

For now, investigators have not publicly confirmed that an opioid overdose caused Panettiere’s death. The autopsy has ruled out contributing trauma, while the cause and manner remain pending further investigation. Any definitive explanation will depend on the completion of those additional studies.
