Anne Hathaway’s D23 moment goes viral after fan interrupts her to ask about baby’s gender
Hathaway and Adam Shulman have chosen to keep their third child’s gender private despite public curiosity

Anne Hathaway found herself facing an unexpectedly personal interruption during her Disney Legends speech at D23, after an audience member asked about the gender of her unborn baby.
The actress was being honoured at the Disney Legends Awards Ceremony on Sunday, August 16, when the question was shouted from the audience. Hathaway, who is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, responded without allowing the interruption to derail the celebratory occasion. Footage of the exchange subsequently spread online, with many viewers praising the actress for remaining composed in an awkward situation.
The moment attracted particular attention because Hathaway and Shulman have already made their position on the baby’s gender clear. The couple know the sex of their child but have chosen not to reveal it publicly. Hathaway previously addressed the subject while promoting her work this summer, saying they were keeping that information private.
The D23 appearance came during a significant weekend for Hathaway. Disney honoured her as one of its 2026 Disney Legends, the company’s highest recognition for individuals whose work has made a lasting contribution to Disney. The official D23 programme lists Hathaway alongside fellow honourees including Dwayne Johnson, Lin Manuel Miranda, the Jonas Brothers, Alan Tudyk, Jerry Bruckheimer and Bob Iger.
Hathaway's connection with Disney stretches back to her breakthrough performance as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries in 2001. She returned as Mia in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004, establishing a connection with the studio that has remained important throughout her career. She also appeared as the White Queen in Alice in Wonderland and its sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass.
During her D23 speech, Hathaway also reflected on the impact of The Princess Diaries and her long association with the franchise. She has been preparing to return as Mia for The Princess Diaries 3, which is currently in production. The film has generated considerable interest because Hathaway is reprising the role decades after the original movie became a major part of her career.
Her appearance at D23 was also notable because she attended with her husband and their two sons, Jonathan and Jack. The family made a rare red carpet appearance together ahead of the ceremony, while Hathaway's pregnancy was visible beneath her white floral dress.
Hathaway announced her third pregnancy in June. She and Shulman are already parents to two sons, and the actress has generally kept her family life away from the intense scrutiny surrounding her Hollywood career.
That privacy has become particularly relevant during her latest pregnancy. Although speculation about the baby’s gender has circulated online, Hathaway has not confirmed whether she and Shulman are expecting a boy or a girl.
