'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' writers say Jean Grey technically did not kill anyone despite her destructive actions

The writers of Spider-Man: Brand New Day have addressed one of the film's most controversial questions: whether Jean Grey actually killed anyone during her destructive rampage through New York.

Played by Sadie Sink, Jean Grey is introduced as a powerful and dangerous mutant whose actions put her at odds with Peter Parker. Although the character ultimately receives a redemption arc, several scenes appear to suggest that her powers may have resulted in multiple deaths.

However, screenwriter Erik Sommers says Jean Grey is not technically responsible for any confirmed deaths in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

“I think technically, she is not responsible for any deaths,” Sommers told The Hollywood Reporter, while acknowledging that Jean causes significant destruction and chaos throughout the movie.

Among the scenes that have sparked discussion is one in which Jean appears to force a man into oncoming traffic. Another sequence leaves a man trapped on a crane, while a building is destroyed during her rampage. None of the characters are definitively shown dying on screen.

Sommers explained that the filmmakers wanted Jean Grey to appear sufficiently threatening before her eventual transformation. According to the writer, the character needed to feel formidable enough to convince audiences that the Department of Damage Control's initial response was justified.

Co-writer Chris McKenna also said the film deliberately keeps Jean's identity and motivations mysterious, allowing viewers to experience the events from Peter's perspective.

With Marvel's X-Men reboot reportedly moving forward, Jean Grey is expected to remain an important part of the MCU's future. Fans may see Sink return as the character in upcoming Marvel projects, potentially including Avengers: Secret Wars.
