'Alarming reports' on Imran's health causing nationwide anxiety and restlessness: PTI

PTI spokesperson says state must allow his doctors, lawyers, sisters and party to see him

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday said that continuously emerging "alarming reports" about the health of party founder Imran Khan were causing nationwide anxiety and restlessness across the entire nation, as it urged the government to allow access to him.

The party's statement came in the wake of a report earlier today by journalist Wajahat Saeed Khan about Imran's alleged death in custody, according to sources. The report ignited intense criticism by the party's followers and supporters amid ongoing concerns about Imran's health and lack of access to him. Imran has been imprisoned since August 2023, currently serving a sentence at Adiala Jail in a £190 million corruption case. He also faces pending trials under the Anti-Terrorism Act related to the protests of May 9, 2023.

In a post on X, the PTI's Central Media Department said that "continuously emerging alarming reports" regarding Imran's health had caused "profound anxiety and restlessness across the entire nation".

It added that "for an extended period, Imran Khan has effectively been kept in solitary confinement, where he is neither being allowed regular meetings with family members nor is the party's political leadership being permitted to meet him".

The PTI statement noted that Imran was the leader of the country's biggest and most popular political party and that his health and safety were "directly linked to the concerns and sentiments of millions of Pakistanis", adding that uncertainty regarding his health could not be prolonged any further and was "unacceptable".

"PTI wants to make it clear that there will be no compromise whatsoever on Imran Khan's health. The government and relevant authorities must come to their senses and recognise the gravity of this matter. Keeping Imran Khan isolated from family, personal physicians and political colleagues for such a prolonged period is not only contrary to human compassion but also violates fundamental legal and democratic principles," it added.

The statement demanded that the government make immediate arrangements to ensure meetings for Imran with his family members, personal physicians, lawyers, and the party's responsible political leadership, adding that his complete medical examination and treatment must be conducted under the supervision of his personal physicians, in the presence of family members and with "full transparency".

"The government must remember that Imran Khan is not the name of an ordinary political worker but the elected and popular political leader of millions of Pakistanis. Taking the public into confidence regarding his health is the government's responsibility," it said.

The X post further stated that "PTI clarifies that no compromise will be accepted on Imran Khan's health, safety, and fundamental human rights. The government must immediately lift all unnecessary restrictions, allow meetings, and provide Imran Khan with complete and quality medical facilities."

PTI Central Secretary Information Sheikh Waqas Akram said that Imran’s life was not a "matter for speculation".

In a post on X, Akram stated that "floating unverified rumours while keeping him in prolonged isolation is a dangerous and irresponsible game. The people of Pakistan will hold the authorities fully accountable for any harm that comes to Imran Khan."

He further demanded that the government "provide proof. End the blackout. Ensure his safety. The state must allow his doctors, lawyers, sisters and party to see him. He is a national hero and deserves to be treated accordingly."

In late January, Imran was first taken to the hospital for a minor eye procedure. Five days later, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that doctors at PIMS had examined his eyes and, after obtaining his written consent, carried out a minor medical procedure that lasted around 20 minutes.

Amid controversy surrounding the eye treatment, PIMS confirmed that Imran was administered an anti-VEGF intravitreal injection to treat right central retinal vein occlusion.

In March, another medical check-up was conducted at Adiala, after which PIMS stated that Imran had shown significant improvement in his vision following his second dose of an intravitreal anti-VEGF injection. The third dose was subsequently administered on March 23.

Party leaders express concern at Supreme Court gathering

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi also said that extremely alarming news was emerging regarding Imran's health, while recalling that when the PTI founder was prime minister, he demonstrated “human compassion” by granting Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Nawaz Sharif permission to go abroad for treatment despite his fake platelet case.

Attending a party gathering outside the Supreme Court, CM Afridi emphasised that “when Imran Khan's health situation is worrisome, they should not stoop so low as to deny him humanity — they should transfer Khan sahib to a hospital for treatment. Don't fall so low in humanity that when your turn comes, there's no one left to raise a voice for you”.

PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said that “extremely alarming news has emerged from jail” regarding the health of Imran and Bushra Bibi and that these reports had “shaken the entire country”.

“We are all saddened and also in a state of anger. Inhuman treatment is being meted out to Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The hearts of the Pakistani nation beat with Imran Khan. The confirmation of these alarming reports about Khan Sahib's health will only come about if his personal doctors are allowed to meet his sisters so that they can present the reality before the nation,” he stated.

Raja underscored that “nothing is more important than Imran's health” as the party’s parliamentarians, CM Afridi and lawyers of the Insaf Lawyers Forum came to the Supreme Court to stage a protest.

Raja further added that they met with the registrar of the Supreme Court and “placed the nation's grief and anger before him”, while demanding that it is “Imran Khan's right for his cases to be heard immediately so that an appropriate order can be issued and access to his doctors and sisters can be possible”.
