Jason Sudeikis surprises Mumford & Sons fans with 'Ted Lasso' theme performance at MSG

Jason Sudeikis surprised fans at Mumford & Sons' Madison Square Garden concert by joining Marcus Mumford onstage for a special performance of the Ted Lasso theme song.

The actor and Ted Lasso co-creator made the surprise appearance during the band's first of three shows at the New York venue on August 11. Marcus Mumford began performing the theme slowly after the concert's 10th song, before cameras turned towards Sudeikis standing at the side of the stage. The crowd erupted as he joined Mumford for an impromptu duet.

Sudeikis and Mumford performed the theme alongside the full band before sharing a hug onstage, with Sudeikis then returning to the audience.

Mumford has a longstanding connection to Ted Lasso. Alongside co-writing and performing its theme, he has contributed other music to the Apple TV+ series, including a version of "You'll Never Walk Alone". The theme was also nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series in 2021.

The surprise appearance comes as Ted Lasso returns for its highly anticipated fourth season, with Sudeikis reprising his Emmy-winning role as the relentlessly optimistic American football coach who travels to England to manage AFC Richmond and its sister women's team. The actor and several of his co-stars previously joined Mumford & Sons onstage in Kansas City last summer to perform the theme while the new season was filming in the area.

The concert featured another unexpected guest later in the night when Oscar Isaac joined Mumford & Sons during the B-stage portion of the show. Isaac and Mumford performed "Dink's Song (Fare Thee Well)", a folk song associated with the 2013 Coen brothers film Inside Llewyn Davis, in which Isaac played Llewyn Davis.

Mumford & Sons' August 11 setlist also included "The Wild", "Run Together", "Little Lion Man", "Awake My Soul", "Hopeless Wanderer", "Lover of the Light", "Prizefighter", "Believe", "Kansas City", "The Cave" and "The Wolf", followed by "Timshel", "White Blank Page" and an encore featuring "Conversation With My Son (Gangsters & Angels)", "The Banjo Song" and "I Will Wait".

Mumford & Sons are scheduled to return to Madison Square Garden for two more shows before continuing their Prizefighter tour through October 8.
