‘The Family Stone’ sequel confirmed with original cast and 20 year story jump
The upcoming film revisits the Stone family years after the original story exploring how relationships have evolved

The Family Stone is officially set to continue its story, with star Dermot Mulroney confirming that a sequel is in development and that most of the original cast is expected to return. The actor shared the update during an appearance on The Tangle podcast, where he also revealed that he has read the script and described it as emotionally significant, particularly in light of recent events surrounding the original film’s legacy.
The sequel follows renewed creative interest from writer and director Thomas Bezucha, who reportedly returned to the project after the death of co star Diane Keaton in October 2025. Keaton played Sybil Stone, the matriarch of the Stone family, whose terminal illness was central to the emotional core of the 2005 holiday drama. Her passing has added a reflective tone to discussions surrounding the continuation of the story.
Mulroney stated that several original cast members have already agreed to return, including Rachel McAdams, Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, Luke Wilson, and Craig T Nelson. He emphasised that the new script explores what has happened to the Stone family more than 20 years after the events of the original film, suggesting significant changes in each character’s life trajectory.
According to Mulroney, the sequel carries a working title he referred to as The Families Stone. He noted that the story expands beyond a simple continuation of the original narrative and instead explores how time, grief, and personal growth have reshaped the family dynamic since the events of the first film. He also hinted that the script contains unexpected developments that redefine how audiences remember the original characters.
The original The Family Stone followed the Stones during a Christmas gathering that became emotionally complicated when Sybil revealed her terminal breast cancer diagnosis. The film resonated with audiences for its blend of humour and emotional depth, eventually earning approximately $93m globally and developing a loyal fan base over the years.
In discussing the sequel, Mulroney reflected on the emotional weight of returning to the material following Keaton’s death. He described the experience of reading the script as difficult to process given her importance to the original ensemble and to the story itself. Writer Thomas Bezucha has also spoken previously about the emotional difficulty of revisiting the fictional Stone family while grieving Keaton’s loss.
Mulroney suggested that nearly the entire original cast has shown interest in returning, reinforcing the project’s status as a major reunion film. While production timelines and release details have not yet been confirmed publicly, the development signals a renewed interest in revisiting character driven family dramas that blend comedy with emotional storytelling.
The sequel is expected to explore both continuity and change, focusing on how the Stone family has evolved across two decades while preserving the tone that made the original film a long lasting holiday favourite.
