Author Emily Henry has responded to growing online debate surrounding the casting of the upcoming “Beach Read” film adaptation, which has sparked mixed reactions from fans ahead of production.

Speaking on the Today With Jenna and Sheinelle show, Henry acknowledged the strong opinions circulating on social media after Patrick Schwarzenegger was cast as Gus Everett opposite Phoebe Dynevor as January Andrews. While some readers have questioned the casting choices, Henry said she understands the reactions but ultimately trusts the filmmaking process.

“I also have to sit back and let it unfold,” Henry said during the interview. “It is our baby, the readers’ and my baby, but it’s almost the filmmakers’ baby and the studio’s baby. I’m along for the ride with the readers, and we just have to trust the vision.”

The film adaptation of Henry’s 2020 romance novel is being directed by Yulin Kuang and is currently in development, with additional casting announcements expected soon. The story follows two writers, January and Gus, whose contrasting personalities and emotional struggles evolve into a complex romantic relationship.

Henry also revealed that she has been receiving updates about other cast members joining the project, though many of those names have not yet been publicly announced. She added that filming is expected to begin soon.

Director Yulin Kuang has previously defended the casting of Schwarzenegger, explaining that the decision was based on chemistry between the leads rather than fan expectations alone. According to Kuang, the dynamic between Schwarzenegger and Dynevor helped solidify their roles after extensive auditions and screen tests.

Henry praised Kuang as “brilliant” and expressed confidence that she will bring the novel to life faithfully while allowing space for a fresh cinematic interpretation.
