Quinta Brunson is set to step into the world of one of animation’s most iconic characters, as she will develop and star in a new Betty Boop feature film from Fleischer Studios and Fifth Chance Productions, according to Variety.

The project is currently in development and will be produced in collaboration with Mark Fleischer, grandson of Betty Boop creator Max Fleischer. The film is expected to explore the origin and evolution of Betty Boop, tracing her journey from early animated shorts into a globally recognised pop culture icon.

Brunson, who created and stars in the Emmy-winning series Abbott Elementary, will also produce the film through her company Fifth Chance Productions alongside Erin Wehrenberg, who serves as head of creative affairs. The adaptation marks Betty Boop’s return to a major theatrical feature role for the first time in decades.

According to Variety, the film will also examine the relationship between Max Fleischer and his creation, offering a narrative that blends artistic ambition with commercial pressure as the character develops a life of her own.

In a statement reported by Variety, Brunson described Betty Boop as a culturally significant character whose influence has endured for nearly a century. She said the project aims to present a “refreshing, subversive, and timeless” take on the animated icon.

Mark Fleischer also praised Brunson’s involvement, noting that her creative energy and comedic voice align strongly with Betty Boop’s personality and legacy.

The film arrives as Brunson continues her success with Abbott Elementary, where she has made history as a writer, actor, and producer. The Betty Boop adaptation further strengthens her growing slate of character-driven projects, positioning her as a leading creative force in Hollywood.
