Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey has given fans their first glimpse of the legendary Cyclops, and many believe veteran actor Bill Irwin is the one bringing the mythical creature to life.

A recent trailer for the film includes a brief but dramatic shot of the giant one-eyed monster, known in Homer’s poem as Polyphemus. The character is one of Odysseus’ most famous adversaries, trapping the hero and his men inside a cave before Odysseus famously blinds him to escape.

According to MovieWeb, Irwin is widely believed to be portraying the Cyclops, although Universal Pictures has not officially confirmed the casting.

The speculation has drawn extra attention because Irwin is a longtime Christopher Nolan collaborator. The actor previously appeared in Interstellar, where he provided the voice and puppeteering for the robots TARS and CASE, two of the film’s most beloved characters.

Irwin is known for his physical performance skills, making him a fitting choice for a creature role that may combine motion capture, prosthetics, and practical effects. His background in stage performance and movement-based acting has led fans to view him as an ideal performer for Polyphemus.

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o and Charlize Theron among the ensemble cast.

The Odyssey is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, and the reveal of the Cyclops has only heightened anticipation for Nolan’s large-scale take on Greek mythology.
